We are seeking an individual to work as an Animal Biologist (Imaging Technologist) at the National Institutes of Health in Bethesda, MD.


This is a long-term contract position which offers:

TASKS/SERVICES. The contractor shall:

(1) Perform advanced small animal PET imaging using PET/CT procedures in experimental animals,

(2) Perform daily, weekly and monthly calibration of the microPET/microCT

(3) Handle and place animals in the scanner

(4) Dose and administer the animals with PET radiopharmaceuticals

(5) Performing data acquisition and processing of brain and body PET and PET/CT scans using research radiopharmaceuticals

(6) Handle experimental animals including tail vein injections, administration of anesthesia and monitoring of animal viral signs.

(7) Perform ex-vivo and in vitro autoradiography and cryostat of hot tissues.

(8) Monitor scan rooms and laboratories for radioactive contamination with survey meters and swipe tests.

(9) Operate computer software on a specialized small animal PET and PET/CT scanner/computer systems including image acquisition, attenuation correction, image reconstruction and display, region of interest analysis, production of metabolic images, data transfer and archiving and scanner calibration.

(10) Participate in the planning and execution of PET research projects in animals including design and logistics of new research protocols, ensure the sufficiency of equipment and computer software, and impact of using new methods in other protocols and techniques.

(11) Demonstrate the proper use of the microPET and microCT scanners and associated software and ancillary PET laboratory equipment to research scientists and fellows.


REQUIREMENTS. The contractor ideally would have:

(1) Bachelors or masters degree in Biological Sciences or other related discipline

(2) Knowledge of the principles and practices of nuclear medicine

(3) Knowledge of PET imaging technology, computer hardware and software, and ancillary laboratory equipment in the organizational design and execution of various research protocols

(4) Knowledge of imaging physics including the concept of energy, the properties of positrons and gamma rays, and the design and use of PET and PET/CT scanners in order to understand the operation of equipment, monitor the equipment for proper operation, make changes in standard procedures to compensate for differences among scanners and determine when maintenance or repair is needed.

(5) Knowledge of radiopharmaceutical practices including calculating and drawing doses, maintaining relevant records, and performing quality control procedures so as to ensure safe administration of radiopharmaceuticals to comply with regulatory standards

(6) Ability to operate and interpret results obtained with PET and PET/CT imaging and ancillary equipment and experience performing radioactivity and biochemical measurements in blood including computerized gamma well counters and glucose analyzer

(7) Basic animal handling procedures such as maintenance of intravenous catheters, anesthesia use, monitoring of animal viral signs, tissue harvesting, and euthanasia as well as knowledge of guidelines for appropriate care of animals
