We are currently seeking an Animal Biologist to work onsite with the National Institutes of Health in Bethesda, MD **.**



This is a long-term contract position which offers:

**TASKS.** The contractor shall:




+ Manage a mouse colony and perform PCR-based genotyping.

+ Handle, dissect and euthanize mice.

+ Work with staff on mouse surgeries.

+ Perform fine dissections of the sinonasal cavity.

+ Perform experiments with primary tissues explants and cells in culture; discuss projects with PI and others.

+ Perform a variety of specialized tissue fixation, embedding, sectioning and staining techniques (bone decalcification and sectioning, frozen tissue sectioning and serial sectioning) to demonstrate a variety of tissue components or materials present in tissues, as required.

+ Perform tissue and cell culture; use sterile technique.

+ Perform adenoviral and adeno-associated virus infection experiments.

+ Perform cell migration, proliferation and invasion assays, qRT-PCR, Western blotting, and immunohistochemistry.

+ Perform light and confocal microscopy.

+ Perform quantitative analysis and image acquisition; maintain complete and detailed records of all experiments.

+ Locate and review the literature pertinent to projects to identify the most applicable protocols and methods; perform experiments in accordance with protocols.

+ Work with staff on the modification of laboratory protocols and experiments based on literature findings.

+ Prepare and maintain stock solutions; operate and troubleshoot laboratory equipment.

+ Prepare and maintain laboratory orders and order processing.

+ Manage laboratory safety protocols.

+ Perform protein assays, gel electrophoresis and western blotting, tissue culture, cell transfections and immunofluorescence.

+ Collect, organize and record experimental data for publication and future reference by others.

+ Organize and maintain laboratory, including inventory and ordering of supplies and equipment; reconcile monthly expenditures; organize and maintain stocks of reagents.

+ Characterize new antibodies by immunocytochemistry, Western blotting and immunofluorescence of sinonasal tissues.

+ Develop strategies to answer cell biological questions related to tumorigenesis.

+ Trouble-shoot and optimize immunofluorescence protocols.

+ Work with staff on decision-making on mouse transgenesis strategies.

+ Work with staff on mouse colony management and the phenotype and morphological characterization of mouse mutant colonies and tumors, using immunofluorescence and small animal imaging techniques (microCT and MRI).

+ Work with staff to maintain, breed, genotype and phenotype transgenic mouse colony; maintain records of mouse colony.

+ Update animal protocol through the submission of amendments and submission of new animal protocols to ensure necessary animal work for experiments.

+ Perform quantitative analysis and image acquisition; maintain complete and detailed records of all experiments.

+ Perform laboratory assays on clinical specimens.





**REQUIREMENTS.** The contractor must have:




+ Bachelors degree in Biology, Biological Sciences or a related discipline.

+ Minimum of five (5) year of related experience.

+ Experience in managing a sizeable mouse colony.

+ Understanding of and proper execution of complex breeding pairings.

+ Experience with PCR genotyping.

+ Experience with basic tissue culture techniques.

+ Strong communication skills, both oral and written.

+ Excellent analytical, organizational and time management skills.
