We are currently seeking an **Animal Biologist - NIH - Bethesda, MD** to work onsite with the National Institutes of Health in **Bethesda, MD** .

TASKS. The contractor shall:




+ Perform procedures in support of pre-clinical animal and tissue studies in the Mouse Imaging Facility (MIF) on various imaging devices. This includes but is not limited to:

+ Animal preparation including anesthesia, injection catheters, and physiological monitoring,

+ Meet with investigators during planning meetings to discuss imaging study needs, procedures and logistics,

+ Maintain detailed and accurate records.

+ Maintain all MIF areas in a clean, neat and orderly fashion according to AAALAC standards. This includes but is not limited to:

+ Identifying equipment and supplies needed, restocking supplies in all areas of MIF,

+ Assist with routine maintenance checks and calibrations on all equipment. Maintain accurate records of equipment and facility repairs and inspections. This includes a log book of equipment problems and service visits,

+ Prepare MPW and sharps containers for removal (includes carcass freezer) as needed,

+ Change cold sterilization solution every two weeks.

+ Ensure that all animal-related work is being performed in accordance with the investigators approved Animal Study Proposals (ASP) as well as all MIF guidelines. Help keep records of animal protocols; ensure that investigators are up-to-date with required training and permissions for performing animal-related work. Notify the MIF veterinarian of any personnel or procedural deviations from ASPs, or any other concerns for animal welfare. This includes but is not limited to:

+ Ensure that all facility users take all recommended safety precautions and wear appropriate Personal Protective Equipment (PPE) as described in their ASP and MIF Guidelines to maintain a safe work environment,

+ Maintain accurate records of investigator training.

+ Perform husbandry duties of the MIF. This includes but is not limited to:

+ Preparation of disposable mouse cages so they are available for investigator use,

+ Twice daily animal room checks,

+ Animal medical treatments as needed,

+ Sweeping and mopping rooms and hallways,

+ Decontamination and sanitation of rooms or racks as needed.

+ Maintain a safe work environment. This includes but is not limited to:

+ Flush eyewash stations weekly,

+ Maintain up to date components of NHP bite and scratch kits,

+ Maintain accurate records of animal-related injuries.

+ Perform daily tasks and help in all areas of the MIF as needed when another employee is out of the office (whether absent employee is on campus or off campus).

+ Perform other technical/administrative tasks as directed by Point of Contact to support the continued safe operation of the Mouse Imaging Facility





REQUIREMENTS. The contractor must have:




+ Bachelors degree in Biology or a related discipline such as Veterinary Technician training.

+ Minimum of two (2) years of experience in an animal facility, veterinary clinic or animal laboratory.

+ American Association for Laboratory Animal Sciences (AALAS) certifications highly desirable (ALAT, LAT, LATG).

+ Knowledge of basic computer skills including email, word processing and spreadsheets.

+ Strong organizational skills and attention to detail.

+ Strong communication skills, both oral and written.

+ Excellent analytical, organizational and time management skills.

+ Ability to work in the presence of high magnetic fields.

+ Must be physically able to lift 50 pounds.
