We are seeking an individual to work as an Animal Biologist at the National Institutes of Health in Rockville, MD





This is a long-term contract position which offers:

TASKS/SERVICES. The contractor shall:




+ Provide mouse colony management support for 200 to 350 cages of mice.

+ Assist as needed with mouse imports, exports, transfers and cryopreservation events.

+ Perform ear punch biopsies on mice.

+ Perform genomic DNA preparation, genotyping and other analyses of mouse tissues using DNA extraction or Polymerase Chain Reaction (PCR).

+ Administer intraperitoneal anesthesia for measurements of Auditory Brainstem Responses (ABR), Distortion of Otoacoustic Emissions Products (DPOAEs) or Vestibular Evoked Potentials (VsEP) testing with pre-, peri-, and post-operative observations.

+ Record performance of mice to behavior tests of vestibular function.

+ Maintain accurate detailed records utilizing computer databases regarding colony, including animal breeding, health and housing areas.

+ Handle and euthanize mice; perform micro-dissection of inner ear tissues in situ hybridization and for immunohistochemistry procedures.

+ Perform a variety of specialized tissue fixation, embedding, sectioning and staining techniques (bone decalcification and sectioning, frozen tissue sectioning and serial sectioning) to demonstrate a variety of tissue components or materials present in tissues.

+ Trouble-shoot and optimize immunofluorescence protocols.

+ Perform light and confocal microscopy.

+ Perform quantitative analysis and image acquisition.

+ Document all laboratory procedures, experiments and results; maintain and update laboratory notebooks and databases.

+ Communicate and collaborate with staff regarding colony and support duties.

+ Assist as needed with laboratory supply organization and requesting of routine supplies through POTS (online purchasing tracking web based application) and requesting of mice through the rodent ordering system.

+ Attend weekly laboratory meetings and participate in laboratory meetings.

+ Attend weekly journal club meetings and NIDCD seminars.

+ Prepare manuscript and figures including statistical analysis, using software (ImageJ, matlab, metamorph, graphpad, Adobe suite) based on findings and results for journal submission.

+ Comply with safety policies, procedures and MSDS guidelines, including those related to biohazards substances.





REQUIREMENTS. The contractor must have:




+ Bachelors degree in Biological Sciences or other related discipline. Four (4) years of specialized experience plus a high school diploma is equivalent to a BA/BS degree.

+ Five (5) years of experience in biology or a related field with experience working in a laboratory environment.

+ Demonstrated experience managing mouse colonies, phenotyping and morphologically characterizing of transgenic and mouse mutant.

+ Competency in technical skills with rodents; experience in handling and restraining of rodents.

+ Experience with basic molecular biology techniques, with histology and immunohistochemistry.

+ Demonstrated experience with phenotyping and morphologically characterizing a mouse mutant

+ Computer literacy in word processing and database record-keeping (Excel format).

+ Research laboratory experience in genomic DNA preparation, PCR analysis, DNA sequence analysis, and gel electrophoresis.

+ Strong communication skills, both oral and written.

+ Excellent interpersonal, analytical, organizational and time management skills.
