Kelly Scientific is seeking an experienced animal care technician for a research lab in South San Francisco. You must have at least 1 year of animal handling experience in a vivarium or vet hospital! Apply today for immediate consideration!

$18-20/hr DOE





**BASIC SUMMARY:** Under close supervision, provide cage wash, general husbandry and/or investigative support following established protocols/guidance documents.




**ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES:**




+ Provide general husbandry and perform cage change procedures following customer Guidance Documents.

+ Perform daily health observations with demonstrated ability to recognize and report abnormalities and common signs of illness

+ Handle and restrain rodents.

+ Maintain accurate records (e.g. documentation of various facility procedures & metrics).

+ Perform routine facility sanitation procedures; maintain a clean, clutter-free facility.

+ Prepare and stock room supplies

+ Monitor and record facility environmental parameters.

+ Perform euthanasia procedures as directed

+ Perform sentinel husbandry procedures to include assisting in receiving , housing and shipping sentinel animals as requested

+ Assist in receiving process; monitor the inventory and provide order requests for animal food, bedding and enrichment

+ Operate husbandry-related equipment (e.g. cage washers, autoclaves, laminar air flow cabinets, etc.) using approved validation technologies.

+ Wash, autoclave and prepare caging and equipment.

+ Recognize and appropriately respond to facility alarms.

+ Discard expired (non-regulated) supplies.

+ Adhere to proper handling and disposal procedures for hazardous materials.

+ Keep assigned areas well maintained.

+ Foster a safe work environment for self and colleagues.

+ Provide logistical support, standard supplies and caging/ equipment for investigators.

+ May provide study support on non-invasive techniques including, but not limited to, animal fasting, body weight, food and water measurement, mating, plug check, etc.

+ Perform all other related duties as assigned.





**QUALIFICATIONS:**




+ **_Education/Experience:_** High School Diploma/GED and one (1) year related husbandry and technical experience required.

+ **_Certification/Licensure:_** AALAS certification at the ALAT level/CALAS initial level preferred or within 24 months of job entry.





**KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS & ABILITIES:**




+ Basic scientific knowledge demonstrated by previous scientific coursework, and/or prior work experience in a scientific setting. Basic understanding of the drug development process helpful.

+ Ability to demonstrate strong teamwork orientation; oral and written communication skills; attention to detail, organization, achieve work goals with minimum daily oversight, and superior customer service focus. Must demonstrate accountability and ethics in performance of daily responsibilities.

+ Achievement of AALAS certification at the ALAT level (or CALAS equivalent) expected within 24 months of job entry.

+ Must be able to follow verbal and written instructions and exhibit interpersonal skills that are conducive to effective communication and that contribute to a congenial work environment. Maintain positive work atmosphere by behaving and communicating in a professional manner with clients, customers, coworkers, and supervisors.

+ Ability to read, write, speak and understand basic English.

+ Computer literacy in word processing and database recordkeeping helpful.





**PHYSICAL DEMANDS:**




+ While performing the duties of this job, the employee is routinely required move about inside the facility, communicate and operate a computer. The employee is frequently required to stand; walk; use hands to finger, handle, or feel objects, tools, or controls; and reach with hands and arms. The employee frequently is required to stoop, kneel, crouch, or crawl. The employee is occasionally required to sit.

+ The employee must regularly lift, push and/or move items such as food and bedding bags, racks of water battles and carts, and racks of animals and supplies, weighing up to 50 pounds independently and occasionally up to 100 pounds with assistance.

+ Specific vision abilities required by this job include close vision, distance vision, peripheral vision, depth perception, and the ability to adjust focus.

+ While performing the duties of this job, the employee is required to use personal protective equipment (PPE) including gloves, protective clothing and eye protection.





**WORK ENVIRONMENT:**




+ Work in a busy research environment, which requires use of sharp objects, working around mechanical parts, working with or near known or unknown toxic or caustic chemicals and/or biological hazards, exposure to fumes and airborne particles.

+ The employee is occasionally exposed to wet and/or humid conditions and risk of electrical shock.

+ Work with animal species including rodents, rabbits and/or dogs with risk of exposure to animal allergens, zoonotic disease, and biohazards.




+ The noise level in the work environment is usually moderate. Hearing protection is required in areas where noise levels rise in excess of 85 decibels.





**Comments:**




+ Normally 40 hours per week. Required to participate in weekend husbandry coverage on a rotational basis and work occasional later hours upon client approval to complete essential duties.
