Kelly FSP Science and Clinical is currently seeking an Associate Scientist for a long-term engagement with one of our Global Pharmaceutical clients. This position is onsite in Raritan, NJ.


This person will join our Kelly FSP (Functional Service Provider) division, a managed solution provider and business unit of Kelly Services, Inc. **Molecular Bacteriology Job Description**


**Level**


+ Assistant Scientist Typically will have a B.S. or B.A. degree in an appropriate discipline with up to two years of experience, or 3-5 years of experience (AS or no degree)


**Job Description**


The scientist will work within the Bacterial Vaccines team to help discover and develop novel vaccines to prevent serious bacterial infections. Primary responsibilities include two main areas of focus: 1. the characterization of clinical bacterial isolates and 2. basic research to identify and characterize bacterial proteins and polysaccharides as potential novel vaccine antigens. Candidates should have a solid background in basic microbiology, with experience in the expression and purification of recombinant proteins a plus. The successful candidate will need to work well in a team environment. The candidate will perform in vitro assays in support of ongoing clinical trials under Good Clinical Laboratory Practice (GCLP) conditions and will maintain laboratory records according to GCLP requirements. Experience working with Biosafety Level (BSL) II bacterial pathogens is required.


**Key responsibilities**

Key responsibilities include, but are not limited to: the maintenance and culture of clinical _E. coli_ isolates, performance of an assay to determine the isolate O-serotype, transformation of lab _E. coli_ strains, screening clones for the expression of recombinant proteins, protein purification, analytical assays such as SDS-PAGE, Western blot and other techniques.


**Qualifications**

**Education**

A minimum of a BS or BA degree is required in biochemistry, microbiology, immunology or related discipline


**Skills and Experiences**

**Required**


+ Up to 2 years of experience working as a scientist in an academic, research, laboratory setting, or biotech/pharma company.

+ Experience in basic microbiology is required, including sterile technique, identification, culture, plasmid transformation

+ Experience in molecular biology is required, including basic cloning techniques and DNA sequence analysis

+ The ability to work well in a team environment, balancing multiple ongoing laboratory activities is required

+ Strong critical, scientific, and strategic thinking skills are required


**Preferred**


+ Experience in the expression and purification of recombinant proteins is preferred

+ Experience in protein biochemistry and basic immunology is preferred

+ Experience with documentation and reporting of results using electronic lab notebooks is preferred

+ Experience working in a regulated laboratory environment (GxP) is preferred
