We are seeking experienced individual to work as a Bioinformatics Scientist at the National Institutes of Health in Rockville, MD.



This is a long-term contract position which offers:

TASKS/SERVICES. The contractor shall:




+ Manage and analyze large genomic databases in epidemiological studies. This includes but are not limited to data manipulation, algorithmic implementation, statistical programming, and integrated genomic analyses.

+ Provide support and expertise in the Unix operating system, databases (including Oracle) and programming languages (including Perl, Python, BioPerl, Java, XML, SQL, JavaScript, JavaServer Page, C/C++, servlets and R), object-oriented programming and design, visualization and dissemination of genetic and genomic data.

+ Install, troubleshoot and run open-source and commercial scientific software on the Unix and Linux platforms.

+ Provide support and expertise with the public bioinformatics and genomic databases and tools (such as GATK, SAMtools, BCFtools, PLINK, cBioPortal, gnomAD, GTEx, GDC).

+ Develop robust pipelines to integrate publicly available data into the downstream analysis of NHGRI/DIR-generated research data.

+ Implement Web-based portals for the dissemination and visualization of research data, including the application of visualization programs intended to facilitate the display of large-scale sequencing data within platforms such as IGV, JBrowse, the Exome Aggregation Consortium (ExAC) browser and gnomAD browser.

+ Develop computational pipelines for processing and analysis of a variety of next-generation sequencing data.

+ Provide training to scientific staff on bioinformatics techniques used in data analysis.





REQUIREMENTS. The contractor must have:




+ Masters degree in a related discipline; three (3) years of specialized experience plus a Bachelors degree is equivalent to a Masters degree.




+ Minimum of five (5) years of progressively responsible scientific and/or complex system management/bioinformatics experience.

+ Excellent skills in algorithmic implementation, statistical programming and data manipulation, using e.g. R/Bioconductor, Matlab, Python, and a of contemporary, opensource bioinformatics tools and database structures (e.g. GATK, MuTect, SAMtools, BCFtoolsPLINK, SNPTEST, GLU, IMPUTE2, BEAGLE, UCSC Genome Browser, etc.).

+ Experience with data mining and visualization for large-scale next-generation sequencing data (such as WGS data).

+ Programming experience with Shell, R, Perl, Python, C/C++, and/or JAVA; and be team oriented with excellent written and verbal communication skills, with demonstrated ability to self-educate in current bioinformatics techniques and resources.

+ Experience in whole genome sequencing mutation and structural variant calling, mutational signatures and epigenetic analysis, familiarity and established working knowledge of tools to investigate cancer genomics with publicly available data sources (such as dbGaP, TCGA, ENCODE, 1000 Genomes, TARGET, GTEX) and diverse genomic annotations; experience managing large datasets and computational tasks, experience working in a Linux environment (especially a compute cluster environment); and experience in the field of molecular and population genetics with a strong publication record.

+ Experience with the analysis of cancer genomic profile, intratumor heterogeneity and tumor evolution.
