We are currently seeking a Biological Scientist with the National Institutes of Health in Bethesda, Maryland.

OBJECTIVE:

Provide technical and laboratory support to the Neuropathology Unit at NINDS.


**Skills**


- The ability to work both independently and as part of a team, possession of excellent


time management and organizational skills, and the ability to multitask and shift priorities when required. - Excellent written and oral communication skills. - Proficiency in record keeping and computer skills, including working with spread sheets/databases. -


Knowledge of BSL-2 precautions for handling clinical specimens -


Experience in histology and immunohistochemistry techniques. -


Several years of laboratory experience in biology lab skills (cell culture, molecular biology, and small animal husbandry)


**TASKS:**


Provides technical experience needed to assist in studying the basic principles of plant and animal life


Study basic principles of plant and animal life, such as origin, relationship, development, anatomy, and function


Assists with performing basic laboratory experiments and procedures


Collect and analyze biological data about relationships among and between organisms and their environment


Monitor and observe experiments, recording production and test data for evaluation by research personnel


Analyze experimental data and interpret results to write reports and summaries of findings


Follow established procedures and regulations for procurement, handling, and storage of patient tissue and fluid


specimens resulting from clinical research protocols


Monitor biorepository database entry including specimen inventory, tracking and documentation of usage, freezer


status, and other required record keeping


Participate in FDA audits of specimen storage and tracking relating to clinical trials


Perform a variety of standard molecular biology and biochemical techniques such as PCR, DNA cloning and plasmid


production, transfection, gene expression silencing, gene editing, gel electrophoresis, and Western blotting


Perform standard cell culture techniques including cryopreservation.


Establish primary cell cultures by mechanically and/or enzymatically dispersing normal and tumorous tissue.


Perform various functional assays on cultured cells (e.g., proliferation, invasion, regulation of gene


expression/differentiation


Perform small animal husbandry including mouse colony maintenance and genotyping; ad-here to and update IACUC


protocols.


Prepares, organizes and maintains various lab samples, supplies, and equipment


Operate, calibrate, or maintain equipment used in quantitative or qualitative analysis, such as spectrophotometers,


calorimeters, flame photometers, or computer-controlled analyzers


Maintain laboratory equipment


Operate laboratory equipment to analyze samples


Analyze laboratory findings


Monitor and ensure the smooth functioning of the laboratory by tracking and ordering supplies in a timely fashion,


keeping laboratory equipment in good working order


Arrange for routine equipment maintenance and repairs, and for staff training on specialized equipment.


Serve as point of contact for facility and space issues, safety inspections.


Perform standard histology techniques including tissue processing, staining, immunohisto-chemistry, and


immunofluorescence


Monitors and maintain histology-related equipment such as a cryostat, automated stainer, digital slide scanner,


fluorescent and brightfield microscopes


Develop and optimize new immunohistochemistry protocols when necessary


Collect and maintain accurate and complete records for the Biospecimen Bank, for clinical trial specimens, and for all


experimental procedures and results.


Maintain up-to-date descriptions of project methodologies, which descriptions may be in-corporated into resulting


publications or procedure manuals


Learns new laboratory techniques and procedures


Program and use computers to store, process, and analyze data


Monitor operational procedures in technical environments to ensure conformance to standards


Interpret research or operational data


Record research or operational data


Provide consultation, training and guidance to other personnel (e.g., neurosurgery residents, students, postgraduate


fellows, collaborators from other laboratories) in the principles and use of specialized techniques and equipment.


Deliverables

- Daily Maintain a complete and current database of tissue procurement, storage, and distribution. - Daily Provide high quality


histology results, associated digital images, and catalogue histology slides - Daily Perform laboratory research tasks


and data analysis in a timely and independent fashion. - Daily Maintain detailed records of all experimental results and


procedures - Daily Participate in professional interactions with other staff, students, and team members - Daily
