We are seeking an **Biological Scientist** at the National Institutes of Health in **Bethesda, MD**


This is a long-term contract position which offers:

**TASKS/SERVICES** . The contractor shall:


+ Run calorimetric and radioimmunoassays.

+ Perform indirect calorimetry.

+ Conduct experiments to investigate glucose and energy metabolism in mice.

+ Record research or operational data

+ Interpret research or operational data

+ Plan and administer biological research programs

+ Study basic principles of plant and animal life, such as origin, relationship, development, anatomy, and function

+ Monitor and observe experiments, recording production and test data for evaluation by research personnel

+ Analyze experimental data and interpret results to write reports and summaries of findings

+ Operate, calibrate, or maintain equipment used in quantitative or qualitative analysis, such as spectrophotometers, calorimeters, flame photometers, or computer-controlled analyzers

+ Maintain laboratory equipment

+ Operate laboratory equipment to analyze samples

+ Analyze laboratory findings

+ Program and use computers to store, process, and analyze data

+ Monitor operational procedures in technical environments to ensure conformance to standards

+ Perform isolation of mouse islets.

+ Collect blood and tissues from mice.

+ Perform indirect calorimetry studies

+ Prepare glucose and insulin tolerance in mice.

+ Conduct radioactive surveys and maintenance of the equipment.

+ Record and analyze the data in an accurate manner; interpret the data; identify problems in the experiments and troubleshoot them.

+ Perform scientific literature searches.

+ Contribute to collaborative projects with other laboratories and departments.

+ Prepare weekly updates on on-going experiments and tasks.

+ Present data at laboratory meeting; give presentations about important scientific papers.

+ Run body composition analysis in mice using NMR.


**REQUIREMENTS** . The contractor must have:


+ Masters degree in Biology, Life Sciences or a related discipline; Three (3) years of specialized experience plus a Bachelors degree is equivalent to a Masters degree.

+ Minimum of three (3) years of laboratory experience.

+ Experience in doing in vivo metabolic studies in mice

+ Ability to maintain accurate and detailed records

+ Knowledge of proper laboratory disposal methods and safety procedures.

+ Outstanding inter-personal and teamwork skills.

+ Strong communications skills, both oral and written

+ Excellent organizational and time management skills
