We are seeking an experienced individual to work as a **Biologist** **(High-Throughput Screening)** at the National Institutes of Health in **Rockville, Maryland** .

The research scientist will contribute to collaborative projects with the goal of developing probes and drug lead candidates against novel targets aligned with the NIH Help End Addiction Long-term (HEAL) initiative, such as pain, addiction, and overdose. They will apply cutting-edge cell biology and bioassay technologies for the development of screening assays and will be involved in all aspects of the implementation of small molecule screening programs including assay design, assay development and optimization, pilot and high-throughput screening, data analysis, and follow-up studies in support of structure-activity relationship (SAR) and mechanism of action studies for the development of novel pharmacological probes.

**This is a long-term contract position which offers:**

**TASKS/SERVICES. The contractor shall:**

+ Work with fellow ETB and DPI scientists on HEAL Initiative projects related to addiction and pain, adopted by ETB and DPI

+ Develop and optimize enzyme and cell-based assays for fully automated robotic screening in 384- or 1536-well format

+ Work with staff on the interpretation of structure-activity relationships obtained from compound screening efforts

+ Work with staff on bioinformatic and structural analysis of results obtained from enzyme assays

+ Analyze the experimental results and organize findings into tables and figures

+ Evaluate new technologies and instruments resulting in proposals for new screening strategies and novel assay formats

+ Search existing literature and propose, design and test alternative assays for difficult screening targets

+ Confirm assay results and determine EC50specificity for primary active samples; develop secondary assays for follow up; communicate results to facilitate small molecule probe development

+ Develop research plans for new projects, including strategies for primary and secondary screens and advanced characterization

+ Work with NCATS teams and with investigators on co-authoring grant application

+ Co-author Research Collaborative Agreement write-ups and proposals for new collaborations between NCATS and academic institutions or private industry

+ Prepare oral presentations and posters for internal and external groups & conferences

+ Propose, design, and test assays to allow for a secondary profiling and utilization of probe candidates at NCATS

+ Propose and investigate new target projects for initiation based on novelty and relevance to human health

+ Provide timely updates to collaborators by sending result summaries by email and by conducting periodic teleconferences to discuss issues and coordinate actions

+ Maintain laboratory equipment

+ Operate laboratory equipment to analyze samples

+ Analyze laboratory findings

+ Maintain laboratory notebooks and databases

+ **Operate liquid dispensing systems Aurora FRD, Kalypsys dispenser and pintool, CyBio Cybi Well, PE Evolution P3 and multimodal detectorsplate readers Tecan Safire, PE ViewLux, PE EnVision, INCell2000 and 1000, Acumen eX3 laser cytometer**

+ **Analyze the experiment results and organize them into tables and figures with Prism Plot**

+ **Write technical reports and prepare manuscripts; write experiment reports and prepare manuscripts for publication in collaboration with other investigators**

**REQUIREMENTS. The contractor must have:**

+ Ph.D. in a science related field.

+ Minimum of ten (10) years of related experience.

+ Skill at maintaining accurate and detailed records of laboratory experiments.
