We are currently seeking a **Biologist - NIH - Bethesda, MD** to work onsite with the National Institutes of Health in **Bethesda, MD** .

This is a long-term contract position which offers:

TASKS. The contractor shall:

+ Implement new collaborative protocols for reprogramming patient-derived tissues into induced pluripotent stem cells; differentiate these (iPSCs) into target cell types of interest.

+ Use primary cell culture biology techniques to propagate human fibroblasts from skin punch biopsies obtained from study participants.

+ Create, maintain, and manage archived cryopreserved primary fibroblasts and lymphoblastoid cell lines, including associated inventory databases.

+ Purify genomic DNA and RNA from diverse tissue types deriving form study participants.

+ Perform quality assessment and control procedures with DNA and RNA samples.

+ Maintain and manage sample archive.

+ Work with DNU database manager to maintain an up-to-date inventory of all laboratory biosamples and a system for tracking sample flow.

+ Secure Materials Transfer Agreements; send/receive samples to/from other laboratories.

+ Oversee diverse aspects of the Developmental Neurogenomics Unit (DNU) wet lab operation.

+ Maintain adequate levels of all supplies and materials.

+ Select and order the specific kind and amount of supplies and materials.

+ Consult with other laboratories in requesting and obtaining reagents.

+ Ensure that instrumentation is in good working order and properly calibrated.

+ Arrange for use of equipment in other laboratories if necessary.

+ Ensure that methods and procedures for safe handling and disposal of any hazardous materials used in the laboratory are followed.

+ Create and maintain a set of reference laboratory protocols to guide in the performance of standard laboratory procedures.

+ Provide orientation and training on methods and procedures.

+ Periodically evaluate progress of experiments to ensure that they are proceeding as planned.

+ Analyze results to determine whether data generated is accurate and meets to goals of the experiments.

+ Compare results with those obtained from previous studies to verify validity.

+ Identify unusual or unexpected results; determine probable causes.

+ Discuss results of experiments with staff; give presentations at staff meetings.

+ Review scientific journals, abstracts, unpublished manuscripts and reports.

+ Review literature on new methods and techniques for potential application in the laboratory.

+ Attend meetings, conferences and lectures on subjects of relevance to the research program.

REQUIREMENTS. The contractor must have:

+ Masters degree in Biological Sciences or other related discipline. Three (3) years of specialized experience plus a BA/BS degree is equivalent to a Masters degree.

+ Five (5) years of experience in Molecular Biology, Immunocytochemistry,

+ or a related field.

+ Experience with the full range of standard molecular biology techniques, including extraction and quantitation of nucleic acids, gel electrophoresis, PCR, dideoxy sequencing and molecular cloning.

+ Experience in mammalian cell culture, growing primary human cells and iPCSs.

+ Experience isolating DNA/RNA from samples, working with human blood samples and other techniques including measuring RINs.

+ Experience with training and mentoring laboratory staff.

+ Strong communications skills, both oral and written.

+ Excellent analytical, organizational and time management skills.
