**Kelly Services** is currently seeking a **Chemist** in **Hunt Valley, MD** to work a contract assignment 12 **month duration** for one of our top clients. **Primary Responsibilities includes:**

The R&D Scientist II will support technology and product development projects with their technical knowledge in the area of analytical chemistry. This position supports a cross-functional team working toward the design and commercialization of new cell culture media and media supplement products. The incumbent will apply their chemistry knowledge to perform standardized assays as well as contribute to the development of new analytical assays to pursue the analysis of experiments designed to address issues in cell growth and production. In addition to responsibilities related to routine sample analysis and method development, the Scientist II will also assist in troubleshooting and optimizing existing products and work with internal and external customers to implement solutions for product technical support needs.


+ Work under general supervision and with other R&D associates to plan and carry out experiments to identify and/or quantify components from complex raw materials for the development of new media and media supplementation products.

+ Perform standard analytical testing of cell culture media or media supplement to quantify individual components, such as amino acids, vitamins, etc.

+ Participate in analytical method development, optimization and validation as needed to develop new assays.

+ Assist in troubleshooting existing products and work with internal and external customers to implement solutions for product technical support.

+ Remain current in the technological and practical advancements in the area of analytical chemistry as it relates to cellular processes through the literature.

+ Regularly communicate plans, actions and results with the manager and other leaders.

+ May be required to perform other general lab duties, such as sample shipping and receiving, etc. as required and/or assigned.

**Education (Minimum Qualifications, must have):**

+ Bachelors degree in Chemistry or related fields plus five years industry experience, or

+ Masters degree in Chemistry or related fields plus two years experience, or

+ PhD in Chemistry, Biochemistry or other related disciplines


**Seek a candidate with very good experience in HPLC/UPLC.**

+ Basic analytical chemistry skills, such as use of balances, pipettes, volumetric glassware to prepare quantitative standards and samples, is required.

+ Experience of properly maintaining a laboratory notebook is required.

+ Hands-on experience in HPLC/UPLC method development and validation is required.

+ Experience operating Agilent 1100/1200 HPLC, Thermo Fisher Vanquish UHPLC with Chromeleon, or Waters HPLC/UPLC instruments with Empower 2/3 software is required.

+ Experience with Agilent GC-MS with Chemstation or MassHunter a plus.

+ Experience with HPLC/UPLC-MS is a plus. Previous hands-on experience in using Thermo Fisher Orbitrap, Waters TQD or Agilent QTOF mass spectrometry, is a differentiator.

+ Hands-on experience developing sample preparation/extraction methods is desired. Liquid-Liquid and Solid-Phase extraction experience is preferred

+ Experience performing wet chemistry assays and 96-well plate based assays using UV-Vis and Fluorescent plate readers desired.

**Knowledge, Skills, Abilities**

+ Familiar with analytical sample preparation, methods and techniques.

+ Good understanding and working knowledge of chemistry principles, such as acid/base chemistry, sample solubility, and precipitation, as it relates to the sample preparation.

+ Knowledge of aqueous chemistry of inorganic and organic compounds used in cell culture media is desired.

+ Ability to perform calculations in Excel and demonstrated competence in data analysis.

+ Excellent verbal and written communication skills and the ability to communicate scientific results in a clear, concise and accurate manner.

+ Excellent organizational skills, including the ability to efficiently evaluate and manage multiple project tasks.
