We are seeking an experienced individual to work as a **Chemist** at the National Institutes of Health in **Rockville, Maryland** .


**This is a long-term contract position which offers:**

**TASKS/SERVICES. The contractor shall:**


+ Perform both routine and specialized laboratory procedures.

+ Perform chemical and biochemical reactions and appropriate analytical analyses.

+ Perform analytical validation and testing of compositions.

+ Synthesize and optimize drug leads for potency, selectivity, physical chemical properties and DMPK properties

+ Perform general maintenance and upkeep of equipment and instrumentation.

+ Troubleshoot and provide routine maintenance of the instruments and equipment.

+ Perform instrument quality control to ensure proper function.

+ Write papers and abstracts detailing research efforts and results for publication in peer-reviewed journals.

+ Maintain up-to-date electronic laboratory notebook detailing all experiments.

+ Collect and review data; analyze and interpret data and results.

+ Search chemical databases for journal articles, patents and related technologies.

+ Function as a chemist lead for the assigned TRND projects:

+ Function as a chemist lead for the assigned projects and provide the chemistry expertise for the projects.

+ Search and read literature references related to the projects

+ Perform chemistry experiments to support preclinical development of the projects.

+ Participate in project meetings for the assigned projects.

+ Present chemistry ideas/experimental results; participate in discussions.

+ Draft technical reports, manuscripts, and present work internally and to external collaborators.

+ Work in multidisciplinary project teams:

+ Understand data produced by biology, PK and safety disciplines.

+ Analyze data; identify problems/issues; plan and carry out solutions by compound design and synthesis.

+ Design and synthesize new molecules to drive forward the objectives of the projects:

+ Plan and execute chemical synthesis.

+ Improve potency and physicochemical properties of compounds.

+ Optimize pharmacokinetic and safety properties of compounds.

+ Participate in the search for CRO (contract research organization).

+ Evaluate and apply new technologies and instruments to improve the quality and function of chemistry:

+ Keep abreast of new synthetic and medicinal chemistry literature, evaluate and when appropriate, incorporate into NCATS.

+ Keep abreast of new chemistry technologies and instruments, evaluate and when appropriate, incorporate into NCATS.

+ Maintain good communications with collaborators.

+ Summarize and present results and conclusions in TRND project meetings.

+ Present results in both internal and external scientific meetings.

+ Write and submit scientific manuscripts to peer-reviewed scientific journals.

+ **Perform chemical synthesis and optimization of small molecule probes for use in biological research.**

+ **Perform organic synthesis of key materials (e.g., reference compounds and precursors for labeling).**

+ **Work with staff in identity, purity and stability analysis.**

+ **Produce compositions at desired scales and purities.**

+ Inventory all chemicals; maintain and provide updates on all shipping and receiving requests.

+ Prepare reagents and track necessary laboratory supplies; prepare test solutions and compounds.

+ Utilize in-house compound tracking system; enter and review data.

+ Devise synthetic routes to target molecules; produce 10-100 member libraries with acceptable purity and deliver quantities to support biological assays.

+ Maintain computer database for various records.

+ Independently design, synthesize and optimize chemical probes for potency and solubility.

+ Develop and present plans for novel syntheses and approaches to new compounds.

+ Carry out scale-up of the chemical probes of interest for additional studies.

+ Train staff on new experiments, practices, operation and maintenance of instruments and equipment and safety practices.

+ Train junior laboratory staff in the design and execution of proper chemical/biochemical protocols.

+ Work with staff on all mandatory training and competency assessments.

+ Organize and mentor staff in the use of instrumentation.

+ Work with facilities manager on evacuation procedures and drills.

+ Work with staff to monitor and manage waste disposal.

+ Monitor and report on all safety issues.

+ Participate in laboratory clean-up events and aid laboratory managers in organizing stock-rooms and bench areas.

+ Gather, analyze and interpret data; prepare summaries and reports.


**REQUIREMENTS. The contractor must have:**


+ Ph.D. in Organic Chemistry, Medicinal Chemistry or a related discipline

+ Five (5) years of related postdoctoral experience.

+ Strong communication skills, both oral and written
