**Chemistry Lab Manager** **— Portland, OR**

The Chemistry Manager will be responsible for managing the day to day activities of the Chemistry Department, ensuring that all work performed is in accordance with established safety and quality procedures within the turnaround time required to meet production needs.

**Essential Duties and Responsibilities:**

+ Responsible for managing and overseeing all daily operations in the Chemistry department, including maintaining a clean work environment, and proper preventive maintenance of equipment.
+ Actively support and ensure compliance with all of Element’s Health, Safety & Environmental policies. This includes actively identifying near misses and hazard identifications in the SHE reporting system.
+ Provide accurate and timely test results in support of customer’s production schedules.
+ Provide chemical analysis per customer requirements
+ Responsible for accurate Job Planning, reading and understanding customer specification documents and translating these into clear instructions for staff.
+ Establish and record metrics for machine utilization, personnel productivity, on time delivery and first time quality.
+ Responsible for delivering continuous improvement within the departments. Success to be measured through the department KPI’s and equipment utilization.
+ Provide management, supervision and training of staff as required:

+ This position is responsible for managing 3 direct reports (Chemistry Supervisors on each shift), and 13 indirect reports (Techs and Chemists). Must have strong leadership skills, be willing to learn and be flexible.
**Job Requirements:**

+ Bachelor’s Degree required in Chemistry, Engineering, or related field of study, with a strong background in metals and chemistry testing.
+ Minimum 5 years of experience in the materials testing industry, with previous supervisory or management experience preferred.
+ Experience with ICP-OES, gas analyzers, and training with cut metal samples for analyses is highly preferred.
+ Ability to train on and interpret documents such as safety rules, operating and maintenance instructions, customer testing specifications, and procedure manuals.
+ Must have advanced knowledge of math and science skills.
+ Experience in interpreting testing procedures and requirements.
+ Previous experience within high-speed, high pressure production environment.
+ Knowledge of financial reporting and business plan principles and practices.
+ Organization, critical thinking and problem solving skills, decision making, and adaptability.
