Description **Clinical Trials Unit (CTU) Research Lab Technician / MLT, Los Angeles, CA**

**Summary:** Prepares human specimens (i.e. blood, urine, stool, saliva, hair) for testing. Prepares experimental materials, chemical solutions using laboratory protocols and safety guidelines. Processes specimens for testing or shipping according to established procedures. Assures integrity of specimens and confidentiality of results. Performs routine and special testing of specimens.

As a Research Lab Technician, you will provide general assistance to support research activities and conduct research experiments in accordance with laboratory and safety protocols. Perform assignments which are non-routine and vary complexity with minimal direction. Compile data and compute results for a variety of research tests and techniques.

**Schedule/Shift:** 1st shift, Mon.-Fri., 7:00am to 3:30pm including some Saturdays and some flexibility with hours during the week when needed.

**Pay Rate:** $18-$19.95/hr, open depending on experience

**Key Responsibilities:**


+ Process and aliquot clinical research specimens.
+ Perform routine operations of instruments as specified by the manufacturers and procedure manual.
+ Prepare and set up specimen tubes/equipment for different procedures for testing and shipping. Processes specimens for testing or shipping according to established procedures.

+ Specimen processing

+ Making dilutions

+ Preparing reagents/solutions
+ Perform moderate and complex testing procedures as described in procedure manual.
+ Performs ESR (erythrocyte sedimentation rate) and reliable hematology slides.
+ Perform simple and major trouble shooting procedures and adjustments as outlined in instrument operations manual.
+ Understand calibration procedures and requirements as stated in the operations and procedure manuals.
+ Responsible for simple maintenance (i.e. daily, weekly, monthly) as specified by the manufacturer and procedure manual.
+ Perform testing within specified time periods as stated in procedure manuals.
+ Proper use of containers, collection timing, labeling, centrifugation and specimen processing techniques.
+ Understand use of quality control material as outlined in procedure manual.
+ Demonstrate ability to complete tasks with a minimum of supervision.
+ Demonstrate ability to learn use of new equipment by reading manual and procedures.
+ Keeps inventory of specimens in freezers.
+ Notify supervisor of any areas that the employee requires assistance or training or current written procedures that are unclear or inadequate.
+ Learns basic laboratory safety and, if appropriate, basic radiation or blood borne pathogen safety under the direction of the USC Safety Office and more experienced laboratory staff.
+ Handles and disposes of hazardous and non-hazardous materials in accordance with safety protocols.
+ Maintains electronic files, databases of protocols and participants specimens.
+ Prepares reports and correspondence as needed.
+ Ensures patient s right to privacy, safety and confidentiality are maintained in accordance with HIPAA regulations.
+ Proficient in Microsoft Word, Excel and Access.
+ Oversee day to day operation for specimen processing and glucose testing.
+ Other duties as assigned.
**Job Requirements:**


+ Prefer Bachelor's Degree (BS) in related field. Minimum degree required is an Associate’s degree (A.S.) with specialized technical training.
+ One (1) to two (2) years of experience in a research or clinical laboratory.
+ Working knowledge of laboratory equipment and research protocols.
