**Construction Chemicals Lab Technician**

**Job Description:**

Kelly Scientific is currently seeking a Lab Technician for a long-term contract role performing routine assignments in the Construction .Chemical Lab of a Fortune 500 chemical company in Midland, MI.

This position supports technical service and developmental projects. In this role the candidate will be responsible for executing lab studies to test end-use performance of construction applications, such as cement based tile adhesives, tape joint compound, and concrete admixtures.

The job will provide an opportunity for the candidate to gain working knowledge of various raw materials that are used to formulate construction products, in particular, dry-mix formulations, as well as to learn more about various application spaces and market needs. They will interact with the entire Midland team, including the lead DCC R&D Scientist, with potential interaction with global R&D colleagues and the North American commercial team.

Job responsibilities may include formulating and testing dry mix mortar samples, tape joint compounds, cement slurry samples, concrete, screening of surfactants, latexes, cellulose ethers, re-dispersible powders, water reducers, silanes/silicones, or other raw materials or customer samples. This would include preparing samples for various applications, as well as generating data according to ASTM and ANSI norms. Potential instrumentation includes: viscometers, Instrons, VICATs (setting apparatus).


+ Completion and adherence to all safety training, including but not limited to: new employee orientation, as well as all other safety programs/training including weekly safety shower and eye bath checks Formulating samples. This may include dry mix mortar samples, tape joint compounds, cement slurry samples, screening of surfactants, latexes, cellulose ethers, re-dispersible powders, water reducers, or other raw materials or customer samples.

+ Preparing samples for various application testing.

+ Testing samples, mainly on the following instruments: viscometers, Instrons, VICAT.

+ Computer work: data entry into spreadsheets/presentations/reports.

+ Data documentation in lab note books.

+ General equipment maintenance and lab clean-up.

+ Ordering supplies.

+ Setting up needed equipment for testing; documenting new procedures.

+ Sample shipping.

+ Learn thickener technology (cellulose ethers, starch ethers, etc), surfactant, acrylic latex technology, re-dispersible powder technology, concrete admixture technology, silanes/silicone chemistry, and various construction applications.


+ Some college chemistry education/training/experience (degree not required bur certainly considered).

+ Basic lab skills a plus.

+ Mathematical calculations required.

+ Mechanical aptitude as demonstrated by previous experience preferred.

+ Eager to learn new things.

+ Willing to take direction from multiple team members.

+ Good interpersonal skills.

+ Strong communication skills.

+ Must adhere to all safety standards.

+ Must be punctual and reliable.

+ Initiative to seek out additional work when tasks are completed.

+ Familiarity with Microsoft programs a plus (in particular: EXCEL, Word, Outlook).

+ Ability to effectively multi-task is a plus.


+ The position may require heavy lifting at times, therefore must be comfortable in asking for help to do certain tasks, as well as to utilize identified tools for the job.

+ Occasionally, must be able to be on their feet for the majority of the work day.
