Data Analyst

Under the direction of the Program Director, the Data Analyst will perform various research and data management activities associated with the Boston Center for Refugee Health and Human Rights (BCRHHR). They will be responsible for managing all aspects of the program’s data analysis needs including establishing and streamlining data collection processes; primary data collection (administering assessments) directly from Center patients, under supervision of program’s clinical staff; extraction of clinical operations data from medical records and other administrative systems; coding data as needed; management of data entry processes; database management including data quality assurance (QA) and ensuring that database is built to accommodate changing data metric requirements; performing data queries, running reports and conducting data analyses as needed for funding agencies and other stakeholders; and contributing to data reporting and dissemination activities including progress reports for funding agencies, manuscripts for peer-review publication, and dissemination to community stakeholders. Additionally, the data Analyst will oversee and coordinate research projects conducted with Center data or with patients being seen in the Center, including projects being conducted by students and trainees, in collaboration with faculty. The Data Analyst will be responsible for generating study reports and publications from the Center data for quality improvement and program evaluation use, as well as for peer-reviewed publications, and for reports to funders. The Data Analyst will provide management and oversight of student interns and program volunteers, specifically and exclusively for the components of their roles that are related to data collection. The Data Analyst will also be responsible for administrative tasks associated with research projects and data management.


Research project management

In collaboration with faculty, the Data Analyst:

  • Oversees and coordinates quantitative and qualitative research studies being conducted by the Center and with Center patients;
  • Manages students and other researchers interested in conducting research in the Center;
  • Analyzes data and drafts publications for internal use and for scientific publication;
  • Administers select questionnaires and assessments with BCRHHR clients, or assists clients in completing self-report questionnaires;
  • Maintain client research files in accordance with legal and institutional guidelines;
  • Reviews the data collection forms for each client for completion and quality; checks work of staff performing data entry to ensure timely and accurate entry;
  • Performs a variety of data management procedures (e.g. data entry, producing basic reports; data cleaning; database maintenance).
  • Run statistical tests on data using statistical programs; generate results and summaries.


Program evaluation and quality improvement data management:

  • Abstracts key data points from medical records and documents on study-specific data collection forms
  • Collects weekly data such as patient visits, provider sessions, number of hours worked, or similar data as per protocol.
  • Ensures accurate, concurrent data within departmental registries by collecting, entering and retrieving clinical data related to all relevant patients.
  • Analyzes information and builds it into a reporting system (weekly, monthly, quarterly, annual) so that it can be provided to Senior Staff, medical directors, and individual physicians.
  • Codes variables using specific data dictionary
  • Responds to any data query or report requests
  • Conducts periodic testing of data validity, identifying and resolving any errors or discrepancies.
  • Provides information, reports, trends analysis, etc to aid in the preparation of IRB submissions.
  • Creates templates of frequently requested reports and train users for quick retrieval of data
  • Coordinates and works closely with internal IT staff on uploading transmission of data to funders.
  • Assists in developing prospective clinical audits for performance improvement initiatives.
  • Maintains study files in accordance with legal and institutional guidelines.
  • Works with team members and practice sites to standardize clinical and faculty performance data and to develop data collection and reporting mechanisms.
  • Works towards the goal of reducing paperwork and redundancy in charting.


Administrative duties

  • Processes information including correspondence, spreadsheets, databases, text forms and reports, which may be complex in nature.
  • Edits and proofreads all correspondence.
  • Evaluates the validity of data and documents contained in all reports.
  • Provides general administrative support, which may include, but is not limited to: scheduling meetings, setting up audio-visual equipment, taking meeting notes, following up on meeting-generated tasks, preparing documents, spreadsheets and presentation slides, answering phones. 

Other duties:

  • Utilizes hospital’s Values as the basis for decision-making and to facilitate the division’s hospital mission.
  • Follows established hospital infection control and safety procedures.
  • Perform other duties as needed.
