Design Project Engineer

Kelly Engineering Resources is currently hiring a Design Project Engineer for a 12-15 month contract position located in Naperville, IL. In this role, your will be joining a global manufacturer of electronic components and contribute to the Mechanical Design and Development of electronic circuit boards. You will report to the engineering manager and support the principal engineers on upcoming new projects for the department of defense. To be successful in this role, you will have experience in mechanical design of PCBs/PCBAs, from concept through production.

**Essential Responsibilities the Design Project Engineer:**

+ Design **electro-mechanical products** and test designs: integrating printed electronic circuits and SMT assemblies within multi-layered mechanical stack-ups.

+ Layout electrical circuits, test designs and mechanical stack-ups, and generate tooling in support of all new products and processes.

+ Use experience with impacts on quality, knowledge of material properties, costs and assembly methods to assess and develop design options.

+ Use critical thinking techniques, including FMEAs, to avoid design issues during the development process.

+ Generate detail drawings and blueprints

+ Coordinate with process engineers and/or technicians to execute project assignments

+ Provide estimates of delivery time for engineering activities.

+ Communicate with internal and external customers to establish product requirements, manage design changes, and report on project status.

+ Work directly with suppliers to specify and order materials and components for prototype fabrication.

+ Collaborate with electrical engineers on products that integrate electronics and mechanical features.

+ Hold design reviews and participate in technical program reviews.

+ Coordinate on-time delivery of samples and prototypes. Help assemble and resolve assembly issues when required.

+ Work with the Quality Department and the internal Reliability Lab to test new design constructions and evaluate issues with production parts.

+ Provide complete and accurate documentation to internal and external customers to support ISO-compliant design processes, including properly detailed drawings, product specifications, bills of material, and assembly instructions.

+ Contribute to new technical capability by creating experimental test designs and prototypes and documenting necessary test data, drawing and reporting on conclusions derived from the data

+ Understand, support and contribute to current to Advanced Quality Planning (AQP), Six Sigma, International Standards Organization (ISO) and Environmental, and/or Health and Safety (EH&S) Management Systems by following stated policies and procedures.

**Qualifications of the Successful Design Project Engineer:**

**Required Qualifications:**

+ Bachelors Degree in Engineering is a hard requirement, prefer Mechanical Engineering, Mechatronic or related

+ 1+ years post Bachelor degree experience in mechanical product development within a high product mix manufacturing environment and completion of at least 1 projects (design through manufacturing) where you led a small team of engineers.

+ Lead roles in small engineering teams; responsible for project success (cost, quality, schedule)

+ Prior experience working on multiple design through prototype projects in various phases of completion. This team environment will be 15 projects within 15 months

+ Experience utilizing an industry standard CAD software. You will use AutoCAD & Altium PCB, proficiency in both is a plus.

+ Excellent verbal & written communication skills

+ Mechanical design aptitude

+ Strong ability to analyze issues and create sound solutions

+ Excellent time management skills and a record of prioritizing project schedule to meets deadlines and project goals in a timely manner.

+ Interpersonal skills to work with different engineering teams, vendors, manufacturing, lead engineers and managers.

+ Comply with DOD ITAR requirements

**Highly Desired Qualifications:**

+ 3-8 years relevant experience

+ Working knowledge of electronics & simple circuits (resistive, R-C, sensors, reads schematics

+ Printed electronics design experience and layout of thick film printed circuits on flexible substrate.

+ Design for various electronics assembly methods: SMT, flip chip bonding, wire bond, hot bar.

+ Integration of printed circuits into mechanical assemblies

+ Project management training or experience leading multiple projects concurrently

+ 3D modeling a plus.

+ MS Project or project management certificates a plus.
