**Job Summary:**


The Director of R&D will be responsible to identify, prioritize and execute scientific innovations, developed and re-developed methods, and new or optimized instrumentation and/or methodologies to improve quality, efficiency, profitability, and service. This position involves bridging scientific leadership, financial accountability, and resource management in all aspects of the R&D department to ensure the successful execution of corporate initiatives and goals.

Requirements:

B.S. + 10 years experience, or M.S. + 7 years experience, or Ph.D. + 4 years experience.

Experience must be Bioanalytical Toxicology laboratory or clinical laboratory, preferably in an ISO environment.

Demonstrated expertise with Lean and Six Sigma techniques, Operational Management concepts, and project management principles.

Understanding of the fundamentals of routine laboratory technology such as chromatography, mass spectrometry, spectrophotometry and understanding of general clinical/forensic laboratory concepts.

Experience with concepts of method development, verification, and validation as applied to a clinical/forensic laboratory.


**Strongly preferred:**

At least 4 years of direct management of laboratory operations

Ph.D. in Life Science discipline

Continuing contributions to research & publication


**Major Duties and Responsibilities:**

Selection, guidance, development, and performance review of direct reports in R&D and the overall resources within the group.

Leads collaboration between marketing teams, lab operations, program management and R&D staff.

Coordinates and prioritizes R&D efforts to ensure timely delivery of expected results while providing transparency of progress and obstacles to stakeholders in other departments.

Works with the Validation team, Lab Operations, and Assistant Lab Directors to ensure R&D methods are implemented effectively as production processes.

Leverages available resources to identify improvement opportunities to existing methods and processes with a focus on reducing/optimizing operations costs while improving service (e.g. TAT) and quality (e.g. cancellations, repeat analysis) parameters in accordance with regulatory compliance.

Anticipates and proactively resolves issues and challenges that may impact projects, including instrument capacity, headcount needs, and risk management.

Develops and manages the annual budget for R&D with input & approval from Finance.

Collaborates with Operations leadership to build, maintain, and execute a technology roadmap.

Engages with Key Opinion Leaders at other labs, research institutions, government agencies, and professional organizations to surveil growth opportunities and summarize those opportunities for business unit teams.


**Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities:**

Strong oral and written communications skills; strong interpersonal skills; experience with high level technical presentations to non-technical individuals.

Sophisticated communication skills regarding scientific concepts to help manage corporate initiatives in areas such as sample preparation, cell biology, immunoassays, molecular technologies, and/or bioanalytical assays for the identification and quantitation of biologically active compounds (e.g., drugs) and their transformation products in biological fluids & tissues employing techniques such as, LC-MS/MS, HPLC, GC, and GC/MS.

Demonstrates deep understanding of and experience with structured product or test development processes.

Experience navigating cross-functional roles and achieving outcomes through use of informal authority.

Capable of leading diverse teams with varying degrees of technical, scientific, and professional complexity and accomplishment.

Knowledge of business and management principles involved in strategic planning, resource allocation, budget management, production methods, and coordination of people and resources.

Motivating, developing, and directing people as they work while respecting areas of expertise.

Meets regulatory compliance standards and has knowledge of and follows proper safety practices.
