**Position Summary**


Reporting to the Chief Medical & Scientific Officer, the Director of Research Programs is responsible for leading the growth, development, and management of our research portfolio focused on the generation and application of empirical evidence to accelerate research and scientific discovery in ways that are meaningful to the patient community and developed through a health equity lens. Our research portfolio includes several programs and activities intending to address gaps in knowledge and/or capacity to accelerate research and the development of therapies to improve the health and wellbeing of those living with rare conditions.


For example, our natural history studies and research collaboration platform allows patients and organizations to inform and shape medical research and translational science for rare diseases by launching high-quality, customized registries to collect the data needed to define the natural progression of their disease ultimately advancing product development.


Our Research Grants Program provides seed grants to academic scientists for translational or clinical studies related to the development of potential new diagnostics or treatments for rare disease. In at least two cases, these grants have resulted ultimately in FDA-approved treatments for patients.


Our research portfolio activities include participation in several multi-stakeholder collaborations and Federally-funded grant projects where the aims are aligned with our mission and where rare disease patients and caregivers are critical to the success of the project.


**Essential Duties and Responsibilities**


+ Lead the successful implementation of Research Programs, contributing to overall strategy and program development and executing on day-to-day operations to meet programmatic goals

+ Work with other departments to ensure that multi-disciplinary approaches are employed, where applicable, to serve the needs of our research portfolio

+ Establish relationships with grant and study sponsors and oversee the development and submission of new funding proposals

+ Engage with customers to ensure program design remains cutting edge and relevant and remains current with trends and practices

+ Develop, track, and control program budgets, including creating annual budgets, forecasts, and periodic reporting to senior management

+ Hire, manage and mentor research staff, setting goals and priorities and fostering a positive and motivating work environment that focuses on accountability

+ Liaise with our Scientific and Medical Advisory Committee and communicate with other scientific experts and clinicians as necessary to achieve program goals

+ Participate in the organizations strategic planning process

+ Perform other duties and functions as assigned


**Education/Experience**


+ Bachelors degree in a relevant field required; Masters degree strongly preferred

+ A minimum of 8-10 years of related health care industry experience required with 5+ years of Director level experience preferred

+ Experience managing multiple research projects, ideally in a non-profit environment, required

+ Clinical expertise, clinical research, registry implementation, clinical data, medical informatics or health information systems experience

+ Experience managing federal and foundation grants a plus

+ Knowledge, Skills and Abilities

+ Passion for our mission and an understanding of the unique needs of the rare disease community

+ Excellent critical thinking, interpersonal, verbal and written communication skills

+ Superior organization, planning and time management skills

+ Superior leadership skills; ability to influence and engage direct and indirect reports and peers

+ Experience developing program budgets and monitoring financial results

+ Excellent technical computer skills, competent with Microsoft Office, strong excel and project management software skills
