**Director of Translational Medicine**
Description
Start-up company poised to leverage the power of active microbial communities to address high unmet medical needs. Our approach lies at the intersection of microbiology, chemistry, and genomics and uniquely enables us to harness the power of the microbiome and define the potential of this new therapeutic modality.
Founded by two leading academics in the microbiome field.
**Description of the Role**
We are currently seeking a highly motivated scientific leader to ensure rapid and thoughtful progression of our discovery portfolio from lead identification through IND enabling pharmacology and toxicology studies. The candidate will be required to manage our germ-free mouse facility, guide and execute IND-enabling in vivo studies, such as pharmacology, safety, toxicology, pharmacodynamics, and participate in regulatory submissions. You will be responsible for generating early preclinical data that supports further clinic investigation of our complex rationally designed microbial consortiums and engineered microbes in a variety of disease indications. You will be also responsible for biomarker discovery. The perfect candidate will have a deep understanding of the animal sciences and be able to guide animal model development in the rapidly evolving and exciting field of microbiome research. Prior experience managing or working in a germ-free mouse facility would be ideal, but not necessary. We are looking for a candidate with specific translational research experience in oncology, metabolic and autoimmune indications. The candidate should be scientifically rigorous and experimentally curious. The role will require meticulous planning and organization to maximize the value of our germ-free gnotobiotic animal facility by seamlessly integrating discovery and pre-clinical development activities, while managing a team of gnotobiotic specialists. In this role, you will be responsible for designing innovative in vivo studies to help unravel the numerous threads that intimately connect our health to the composition of the microbiome. In addition to being a thought leader in the organization, you will be overseeing the budget, operations and research focus of the vivarium. You will be expected to be a flexible, adaptable, and intellectually rigorous team member and you will play a critical role in the design and development of microbiome therapeutics at the absolute forefront of the field.
**Core responsibilities and opportunities are:**
Manage our germ-free animal facility
Lead all translational sciences including animal model development, pharmacology, and toxicology, including any external translational CRO assessment and management
Design careful in vivo studies in germ-free mice to elucidate the link between the microbiome and human health
Provide expert advice to guide research strategy, indication selections and portfolio decisions
Work rigorously as an individual and passionately as part of a team
**Desired Skills:**
Provide strategic direction in the execution and data interpretation of IND-enabling non-clinical studies
Proven track record of advancing projects through IND enabling studies and into early clinical analysis
Successfully submitted an IND or equivalent to allow clinical investigation
A deep understanding of metabolic and auto-immune animal model development and translatability is required
Direct management experience and team leadership skills are necessary
Must have an ability to think strategically and communicate clearly to set and guide the translational sciences strategy
Excellent verbal and written communication to enable efficient regulatory filings and interactions
Experience with live-bacterial-product (LBP) regulatory requirements is desirable
Requirements
**Key Qualifications**
MD or PhD in a relevant discipline (immunology or pharmacology preferred)
10+ years of industry experience in an applied translational science group successfully transitioning several projects from research to the clinic
Experience mentoring individuals, managing a group and leading a cross-functional team is highly desired
Functional knowledge of key metabolic and immunological mouse models
Experience with germ-free animal models is desired
