We are seeking an **Electron Microscopy Technician** at the National Institutes of Health in **Bethesda, MD**

This is a long-term contract position which offers:

**TASKS/SERVICES** . The contractor shall:

1. Perform experiments on samples according to protocols.

2. Work with staff on processing specimens for embedding according to protocols.

3. Perform quality control procedures necessary to ensure the accuracy of each test system, sample processing, storage, and inventory of samples.

4. Process samples for plastic embedding for transmission electron microscopy examination according to standard protocols

5. Prepare high quality slices of fixed tissues via a microslicervibratome

6. Perform fundamental procedures required for research projects.

7. Follow established procedures and protocols; utilize aseptic technique to perform experiments.

8. Perform a variety of laboratory techniques and procedures.

9. Perform routine experiments and tests; follow established procedures and protocols.

10. Prepare materials and equipment for experiments.

11. Maintain stocked supplies and records of working reagents, including fixatives, buffers, solvents, and staining.

12. Process and organize multiple samples simultaneously.

13. Work with a variety of routine and specialized laboratory instruments and equipment in the laboratory.

14. Ensure that all specimens and equipment necessary for experiments are available and in good order.

15. Prepare specimens and equipment for use in the laboratory.

16. Maintain inventory system and sample storage according to outlined guidelines.

17. Ensure that policies and procedures regarding sample retrieval and use are followed.

18. Perform processing, description, and analysis of samples.

19. Work with staff to implement storage and distribution of biological samples for future scientific research.

20. Convey and discuss research results with team lab members.

21. Update and maintain written laboratory record of the work.

22. Collect and enter research data into laboratory notebooks and databases.

23. Collect data and prepare for analysis and interpretation.

24. Work with staff on the maintenance of laboratory logs and databases.

25. Ensure that supplies and consumables are ready and on hand as necessary for maximum efficiency in the laboratory.

26. Work with Electron Microscopy Facility staff to maintain stocked supplies and records of working reagents, including fixatives, buffers, solvents, and staining solutions

27. Work with staff to cover glassware washing, media preparation, and autoclaving.

28. Clean glassware and microscopic slides.

29. Ensure that adequate clean inventory is available for immediate usage.

30. Prepare high quality thick and thin plastic sections for transmission electron microscopy examination via an ultramicrotome

31. Work with Electron Microscopy Facility staff on quality of grid staining

32. Abide by safety standards on usage and disposal of chemicals and reagents

33. Ensure that supplies and consumables are ready and on hand as necessary for maximum efficiency in the laboratory.

34. Perform laboratory maintenance tasks, including scheduling liquid waste container pickup.

**REQUIREMENTS** . The contractor must have:

1. Bachelors degree in Biology or related field

2. Approximately 1 to 3 years of experience

3. Histotechnologist Certificate is preferred.

4. Experience with: Tissue Sectioning, Tissue Dissection, Maintain laboratory notebook record keeping, Maintaining Stock Solutions, Inventory Management

5. Experience with Software such as: Outlook, Excel, Word
