SUMMARY:

Develops, implements and maintains environmental health and safety programs to ensure programs meet or exceed applicable legislation, regulations, by-laws and company directives for client and client plants.

Management/ Leadership:

1. Development, implementation and maintenance of the Health & Safety Systems. Evaluating effectiveness on a continuous basis, identifying areas for improvement, corrective actions and follow up.

2. Development, implementation and maintenance of the Environmental Safety Systems. Evaluating effectiveness on a continuous basis, identifying areas for improvement, corrective actions and follow up.

3. Identifies the need for continuous improvement and champions change to policies, procedures and engineering controls to ensure compliance with environmental, health & safety regulations and to avoid hazards to employees, visitors, contractors or the general public.

4. Promote awareness of environmental, health and safety issues and employee wellness initiatives through interactive employee engagement, employee training, and outside resource material and publications.

5. Maintains and recommends improvement to performance measurable for environmental, health & safety. Reports on performance of measurable to Leadership.

6. Provides expertise to Leadership teams with in the development of improvement action plans, setting objectives, monitoring progress, establishing policies and procedures.

7. Maintains management systems in accordance with the registered standards including ISO 14001

8. Coordinates the development of environmental, health and safety training and education programs. Delivers training to employees.

Monitoring/ Investigating/ Improvements:

9. Monitors environmental, health & safety legislation and trends from federal, state and municipal sources. Assesses impact and recommending changes in programs, procedures and policies.

10. Conducts and co-ordinates inspections and audits to identify environmental and safety risks and recommend improvements. Internal audits, workplace inspections, housekeeping audits, etc.

11. Provides information on material handling, storage, use, exposure levels and disposal including reducing, recycling and reusing waste to improve savings.

12. Collects, analyzes and tracks waste streams to ensure compliance to legal requirements. Co-ordinates waste removal, as needed.

13. Establishes, implements and maintains an environmental, health & safety Control Plan, as required.

14. Participates in inspections of new equipment prior to start-up to ensure compliance with environmental, health and safety standards.

15. Co-ordinate testing and evaluation of new, replacement or substitute materials, protective clothing and safety equipment to ensure proper application and compliance to safety standards.

16. Communicate with medical clinic and insurance provider to accommodate employee Early Safe Return to Work (ESRTW) strategies as per ESRTW Program.

17. Review Incident Reports to ensure investigations are effective, root causes are identified and appropriate corrective actions are followed-up on. Conducts incident investigation and recommend improvements.

18. Monitors company experience modifier provided by insurance company and recommend improvements to lower and maintain cost structure.

19. Monitor, communicate and champion data used for key performance indicators. Enhance operational improvements utilizing visual management to communicate plant status. Analyze injury trends and champion the problem-solving process to lead the facility in implementing corrective actions.

Administration:

20. Prepares documentation for environmental and safety authorities, as required.

21. Participates in budgeting process, administers the environmental and safety budget, monitoring and controlling expenditures.

22. Maintains a variety of manual and electronic files and databases. Ensure that files and records are securely stored and available as needed for review by internal and external parties

23. Ensures Safety Data Sheets (SDS) database and hard copies are in compliance.

24. Establish, implement and maintain the emergency response plan including conducting regular scheduled drills and improvements.

25. Responds to public environmental complaints with the leadership team to ensure no hazard exists and to resolve public concern.

26. Facilitates external loss control tours and champions recommended improvements.

27. Ensures annual review of all environmental, health and safety policies and procedures.

28. Ensure that information required to be posted by the OSHA and MIOSHA management system and company directives are posted in the plants.

Meetings and Teamwork:

29. Oversee and participate on the health and safety team and related sub-committees. Assist with action item identification and tracking.

30. Liaise with others in the organization to share information, resolve problems and provide specialist support.

31. Attends a variety of meetings such as stand-up meetings, work team meetings, business information meetings (BIM) to communicate environmental, health and safety direction, objectives, and improvements.

32. Participates in communications with the public, representatives of external organizations involved in workplace environmental, health and safety issues, gathering information and networking.

35. Applies the principles of client Participative Management

36. Performs other tasks as assigned by management

Qualifications:

To perform this job successfully, an individual must be able to perform each essential task satisfactorily. The requirements listed below are representative of the knowledge, skill, and/or ability required. - Degree/ Certificate in a related field

- Minimum of 5-8 years related work

- Professional Safety Certification would be an asset

- Familiarity and knowledge of all applicable occupational safety and environmental legislation

- Proficient computer skills in MS Office

- Demonstrated interpersonal, communication, presentation, listening and high level of writing skills necessary to produce and provide information to individuals, teams and customers

- Demonstrated strong organizational, planning and priority setting skills to complete multiple tasks and projects

- Experience in developing and implementing management systems

- Internal auditing and/or compliance auditing experience

- Experience in metal fabrication including CNC machining environment is an asset

Education/Experience:

Minimum 5 to 8 years work experience or combined education and work experience in an environment/ health & safety-related discipline or equivalent work experience

Language Skills:

Demonstrated ability to read and interpret documents such as company policies, accounting concepts, and procedure manuals. Must have high level of interpersonal skills to handle sensitive and confidential situations. Must be able to interact and communicate with individuals at all levels of the organization.

Physical Requirements:

The physical demands described here are representative of those that must be met by an employee to successfully perform the essential functions of this job. Standing, sitting and walking can be expected. Specific vision abilities required include close vision, distance vision, peripheral and depth perception as well as the ability to focus. Must be able to use safety equipment including, but not limited to, safety shoes, ear plugs and glasses. Must be able to travel between manufacturing locations.

Must be open to specific job training requirements as detailed on job training checklist, evaluations, and/or company mandated.
