Functional Safety Engineer

The Functional Safety Engineer is an experienced safety analyst that conducts standard safety analyses by applying functional safety standards and principles to provide feedback and guidance to the engineering design teams for systems, hardware, and software on safety findings and to recommended design changes that improve automotive embedded safety systems and ensure their compliance to safety goals.


**Primary Responsibilities:**


+ Lead the safety plan and enable the project team through all phases of safety engineering: requirements elicitation, item definitions, preliminary hazard analysis and risk assessment, functional safety concept, technical safety concept, item integration, safety validation.

+ Collaborate with the design team to develop, implement and validate effective solutions.

+ Lead and coordinate safety activities with customers, suppliers, and other company functional groups.

+ Serve as main customer technical interface for functional safety topics.

+ Perform technical analysis and provide results to support the development of the safety concept and documentation of the safety case: hazard and risk assessment, hazard metric translation, define safety goals and criteria, ASIL decomposition, FMEA and FTA analysis

+ Consult and collaborate with the software design teams to achieve effective technical solutions and ensure that all safety requirements are robust at the systems level, hardware interface level and software architectural levels

+ Actively participate in product development; including planning and monitoring of safety plans; plan and define validation testing

+ Support functional safety verification and validation


**Minimum Qualifications:**


+ Bachelors in Electrical Engineering, Computer Engineering, Control Engineering, Physics or related if combined with development engineering experience in embedded control systems.

+ Preferred candidate possesses a minimum of 5 years experience as a safety analyst in an automotive environment. Other technical environments, including avionics and military (Mil-Std-882) will be considered.

+ Prefer previous experience with Embedded Electronic Controls systems (E.g., Brake, Airbag, Steering)

+ Prefer experience in applying safety according to ISO DIS 26262 standards, or secondly IEC 61508 standard.

+ Prefer good understanding of embedded Software engineering and Hardware engineering domains.

+ 10+ years of automotive product engineering experience working in product development with OEM and with preferred focus on brake control components such, electric brake actuators and electrical parking brake.

+ Electrical Controller Unit of automotive system design and validation experience preferred.

+ Experience with software development and software in the loop testing preferred.


**Technical Competencies:**


+ FTA to the methods of NUREG-0492 and/or IEC 61025FMEA/FMECA to SAE J1739, VDA 4, and/or Mil-std-1629

+ Failure metrics analysis in accordance with ISO DIS-26262 and/or Safe Failure Fraction in accordance with IEC-61508.

+ FTA and FMEA using computer aided analysis tools (E.g. ITEM Toolkit, Relex, Isograph, etc.)

+ Reliability Predictions in accordance with IEC 62380, Mil-Hdbk-217 or Telcordia.

+ Human Factors Analysis IAW Mil-Hdbk-1472 or equivalent.
