Through our partnership with the National Institutes of Health, Kelly Government Solutions offers administrative, IT, engineering, scientific, and healthcare professionals the opportunity to work with the leading medical research center in the world. We are seeking an individual to work as a Health and Science Writer/Editor at the National Institutes of Health in Bethesda, MD.

This is a long-term contract position which offers:

TASKS/SERVICES. The contractor shall:

(1) Collaborate with senior leadership to design and implement a publications program that enhances development and dissemination of information about the Institutes research programs, activities and outcomes.

(2) Provide senior-level writing and editing support for online and print materials and publications and serve as lead for editorial operations and advice for written content.

(3) Write and edit health and science communications information for lay audiences in a variety of formats, including articles, blog posts, factsheets, one-pagers, brochures, presentations and speeches, workshop summaries, reports, briefing materials, press releases, along with content for digital media, for online and print formats.

(4) Critically review draft documents, synthesize comments, verify content from source data, and incorporate appropriate comments from other reviewers into successive drafts to prepare final documents.

(5) Prepare work products for use in presentations; organize data in various forms such as charts, graphics, tables, illustrations, diagrams and PowerPoint presentations.

(6) Provide copy edit support to assure the quality of all documents based on writing standards such as GPO Style Manual and Associated Press (AP) style, punctuation and grammar standards; maintain writing style guide

(7) Conduct extensive research on the subject matter; interview and/or observe subject matter experts; research journals and on-line resources, and other substantive source material to write about scientific topics.

(8) Maintain editorial calendar to ensure that posts and publications are completed by deadlines; update and share content calendar with staff.

(9) Provide support for general health and science communications activities that involve content creation for health communications and outreach projects, and online events.

REQUIREMENTS. The contractor must have:

(1) Bachelors or masters degree in a scientific or related discipline.

(2) Minimum of five (5) years of health and science writing and editing experience

(3) Mastery of Standard English grammar, writing and editing principles, concepts and techniques, and style requirements.

(4) Experience writing about minority health, health equity and health disparities topics, particularly in the U.S.

(5) Ability to translate complex science and health information for non-scientific audiences into digestible formats for promotion and distribution across communication channels (i.e., print digital and video platforms).

(6) Ability to serve as senior editor for writing produced by others with extensive knowledge of Associated Press and other leading style guides.

(7) Ability to interview leaders in biomedical/behavioral research, health care, public policy and related fields.

(8) Ability to research, review, analyze, interpret, validate, organize and produce information for a variety of audiences and in various formats, including online, print and video formats.

(9) Advanced knowledge of and the ability to use MS Word, PowerPoint, Excel, PubMed, Reference Manager, and Adobe Acrobat.

(10) Knowledge of and ability to use project management tools and techniques.

(11) Knowledge of scientific information sources, research methods, publishing processes, policies and procedures; relevant government policies, procedures and requirements.

(12) Strong communications skills, both oral and written, with the ability to write using the plain language principles.
