Kelly Scientific is seeking a **Temporary Organic Chemist/Mass Spectrometrist** in Morrisville, NC. This position will be responsible for the synthesis of organic compounds that support various project needs: synthesis of analytical standards and the synthesis of small molecules to help identify the proposed structures of unknown compounds.

The successful candidate will have experience in organic synthesis and LC-MS, including UPLC and mass spectrometry operation and maintenance.

+ Conceptualize experimental procedures and organic reaction sequences, solve problems, and make experimental decisions

+ Synthesize analytical standards to support bioanalytical studies. Perform characterization and determine purity using necessary analytical techniques (LC-MS, NMR, KF, etc.)

+ Synthesize labeled internal standards to support bioanalytical studies. Perform characterization to determine chemical and isotopic purity

+ Synthesize small molecules to help identify the proposed structures of unknown compounds. In addition to synthesis, this involves matching the compounds by LC-MS/MS to proprietary library entries

+ Complete assignments on schedule and display good lab practices

+ Maintain lab notebook for documentation

+ Follow site safety regulations of safe lab design and work practices

**Requirements for the Chemist**

+ Bachelors degree or greater in a technical field is required (Chemistry, Biology, or Biochemistry is ideal) with 5+ years of relevant post-degree experience

+ Familiarity with and ability/flexibility to synthesize glucuronide, carnitine, sulfate, acetate (etc) derivatives of various chemical classes including lipids, fatty acids, carbohydrates, amino acid derivatives, bile acids, etc.

+ Ability to design/research and execute 2-4 step synthetic routes.

+ Formal training (academic or industrial) in mass spectrometry/analytical chemistry, and be skilled in carrying out sophisticated mass spectrometric experiments, such as accurate mass and MS/MS is required

+ Ability to rely on experience and judgment to plan and accomplish goals and perform a variety of complicated tasks

+ Possess a wide degree of creativity and latitude
