Description **Job Description**
Is capable of performing a variety of structural and/or pipe fitting functions where applicable. The individual should be familiar with and capable of using various types of fitting equipment. A fitter is also required to perform other miscellaneous tasks, as supervision deems necessary.
- Position, align, fit, parts to form complete units or subunits, following blueprints and layout specifications, and using jigs, welding torches, and hand tools.
- Verify conformance of workpieces to specifications, using squares, rulers, and measuring tapes.
- Lay out and examine metal stock or workpieces to be processed to ensure that specifications are met.
- Align and fit parts according to specifications, using jacks, turnbuckles, wedges, drift pins, pry bars, and hammers.
- Locate and mark workpiece bending and cutting lines, allowing for stock thickness, machine and welding shrinkage, and other component specifications.
- Position or tighten braces, jacks, clamps, ropes, or bolt straps, or bolt parts in position for welding or riveting.
- Study engineering drawings and blueprints to determine materials requirements and task sequences.
- Move parts into position, manually or with hoists or cranes.
- Set up and operate acetylene torch(s), grinders, and drill presses, cut, punch, drill, or otherwise form and assemble metal components.
- Heat-treat parts, using acetylene torches.
- Hammer, chip, and grind workpieces to cut, bend, and straighten metal.
- Smooth workpiece edges and fix taps, tubes, and valves.
- Design and construct templates and fixtures, using hand tools.
- Straighten warped or bent parts, using sledges, hand torches, straightening presses, or bulldozers.
- Mark reference points onto floors or face blocks and transpose them to workpieces, using measuring devices, squares, chalk, and soapstone.
- Set up face blocks, jigs, and fixtures.
- Remove high spots and cut bevels, using hand files, portable grinders, and cutting torches.
- Preheat workpieces to make them malleable, using hand torches or furnaces.
- Direct welders to build up low spots or short pieces with weld.
- Erect ladders and scaffolding to fit together large assemblies.
- Maintain a clean and orderly work area.
**Requirements**
- Ability to read and interpret documents furnished in written, oral, diagram or schedule form such as safety rules, operating and maintenance instructions, quality manuals and procedure manuals.
- Be able to read and interpret blueprints.
- Must be able to read a tape measure.
- Ability to perform simple shop math, convert decimals to fractional equivalents.
- Ability to use weld fillet gauges to ensure proper weld size, interpret tolerances, and knowledge of weld symbols.
- Must be able to identify and measure material
