We are seeking an individual to work as a Ph.D. Science Writer (Minority Health & Health Disparities) at the National Institutes of Health in Bethesda, MD.


This is a long-term contract position which offers:

TASKS/SERVICES. The contractor shall:

(1) Collaborate with senior leadership to design and implement a publications program that enhances development and dissemination of information about the National Institute on Minority Health and Health Disparities (NIMHD) research programs, activities and outcomes.

(2) Provide senior-level writing and editing support for online and print materials and publications

(3) Serve as lead for editorial operations and advice for written content.

(4) Write and edit health and science communications information for lay audiences in a variety of formats, including articles, blog posts, factsheets, one-pagers, brochures, presentations and speeches, workshop summaries, reports, briefing materials, press releases, along with content for digital media, for online and print formats.

(5) Critically review draft documents, synthesize comments, verify content from source data, and incorporate appropriate comments from other reviewers into successive drafts to prepare final documents.

(6) Prepare work products for use in presentations; organize data in various forms such as charts, graphics, tables, illustrations, diagrams and PowerPoint presentations.

(7) Provide copy edit support to assure the quality of all documents based on writing standards such as GPO Style Manual and Associated Press (AP) style, punctuation and grammar standards; maintain writing style guide

(8) Conduct extensive research on the subject matter; interview and/or observe subject matter experts; research journals and on-line resources, and other substantive source material to write about scientific topics.

(9) Maintain editorial calendar to ensure that posts and publications are completed by deadlines; update and share content calendar with staff.

(10) Provide support and advice for general health and science communications activities that involve content creation for health communications and outreach projects, and online events.


REQUIREMENTS. The contractor must have:

(1) Ph.D. in a scientific, public health, social science, communications, or related discipline.

(2) Health and science writing/editing experience that includes writing about minority health, health equity, and/or health disparities topics

(3) Ability to translate complex science and health information for non-scientific audiences into digestible formats for promotion and distribution across communication channels (i.e., print digital and video platforms).

(4) Ability to research, review, analyze, interpret, validate, organize and produce information for a variety of audiences and in various formats, including online, print and video formats.

(5) Knowledge of scientific information sources, research methods, publishing processes, policies and procedures; relevant government policies, procedures and requirements.
