**Preclinical Surgical Specialist Everett, WA**

Manages surgical program including daily workflow, personnel assignments, training,

equipment, and supplies. Performs selected surgical procedures that require advanced

expertise/experience. Facilitates all aspects of surgery and surgical support functions according to SOPs and GLP. Supports Study Supervisor(s) and Study Director(s) by performing and assisting with surgical procedure coordination and execution on research studies.


+ Follows, performs, and develops SOPs and Protocols for surgery and surgical support for study and stock animals, including, but not limited to femoral/intrathecal catheterizations, telemetry implantations, skin/muscle/bone marrow/lymph node/liver biopsies, cerebrospinal fluid collection, intracerebroventricular (ICV) cannula implantation, osmotic pump implantation,endoscopy, bronchoalveolar lavage, electroencephalography (EEG), apheresis, gas anesthesia, anesthesia monitoring, and experimental procedures.

+ Manages the daily workflow for the surgical program, including, but not limited to personnel assignments, surgery facility availability, and study/stock surgery needs to ensure procedures are performed as required and the facility is properly maintained.

+ Coordinates with Safety Assessment and Laboratory Animal Resources to plan, perform, and create surgical procedures in SOP and Protocol form.

+ Creation and maintenance of the surgical training program and continued training of personnel to GLP and company standards using written instruction, simulation, practical, and vendor training program resources.

+ Ensures continued function and maintenance of surgical equipment.

+ Orders and inventories supply in the surgical facilities, including study specific supplies.

+ Operates selected laboratory equipment (e.g., surgical, imaging, telemetry, and ECG equipment).

+ Attends and participates in meetings regarding project and study planning.

+ Communicates with clients regarding surgical procedures and facilities.

+ Legibly records and reviews raw study and facility data.

+ Recognizes animal behavior and health status, and reports to appropriate personnel.

+ Monitors and reports study changes to Study Director and all appropriate personnel.

+ Attends department meetings, reviews, and other pertinent training sessions.

+ Maintains and performs general facility cleaning, stocking, and inventory.

+ Creates, reviews, and revises SOPs relating to animals, technical procedures, and facility issues.

+ Performs and trains staff on technical procedures on animals, including dose administration, blood/urine/fecal/saliva collection, catheter placement, clinical observations, body weights, telemetry, feeding, restraint, enrichment and ECG.

+ Handles and restrains laboratory animals, including but not limited to, mice, rats, rabbits, canines, and non-human primates.

+ May cross train in other departments.

+ May perform duties of a Research Specialist or Study Supervisor.

+ May assist with creation of study and staff schedules.

+ Other duties as assigned.


+ Education: BS/BA in a scientific discipline.

+ Work Experience: 4+ years experience or familiarity with at least one of the following, surgical technique, telemetry, ECG, EEG, or similar procedure in animal species (preclinical GLP experience preferred).

+ Certificates/Licenses /Registrations: LATg certification or equivalent preferred.

+ Training Requirements: Continual GLP training and training on applicable procedures and SOPs within the department.
