Role Overview


Kelly is seeking qualified personnel to fill a role for process automation project work as a Process Automation Application Engineer. Desirable attributes of the potential candidate should include a thorough understanding of DCS Process Control Systems which includes software programming techniques and associated HMI systems programming. The candidate should have experience in applying process control systems in chemical manufacturing facilities and have a good understanding of chemical engineering fundamentals. This request is for an experienced hire with a minimum of 5 years experience; a 4-year degree is preferred but is not required. Candidates with significant experience will be considered.


Scope of Deliverables


Successful applicants for this role will complete [be responsible for] the following project deliverables:


Work as part of an integrated design team to meet project requirements and deliverables.


Work with Process Engineers, Manufacturing Representatives, and Process Engineering SMEs (Subject Matter Experts) to develop Piping and Instrument Drawings (P&IDs).


Develop process control specifications.


Configure process control software to meet process control specifications.


Develop HMI (Human Machine Interface) graphics.


Perform software simulation of process control application and HMI applications software.


Work with project team to integrate process control software into final program for target chemical manufacturing facility.


Provide training of chemical facility operations personnel.


Provide documentation of operational details (example: alarm details specific to operator actions).


Provide support for DCS (Distributed Control System) commissioning and check-out.


Work as part of project team to provide facility startup coverage.


Candidate Attributes


Knowledge and/or experience in control system applications software programming and troubleshooting in chemical manufacturing facilities.


Experience in design and implementation of the following process control principles:


- Analog control (PID, cascade, and constraint controllers)


- State Based control knowledge or Batch control knowledge


- Alarms and Interlocks


- Digital logic applications


Knowledge or implementation experience in SIS (Safety Instrumented Systems) is desirable.


Control Systems software strategy design, developing user requirements, functional requirements, and detailed design specifications or Client PCSD (Process Control Strategy Documentation).


Ability to communicate and work with diverse discipline project teams, ability to learn new methods and technologies, ability to work on projects without being supervised. Candidate must be able to read, write, and speak English.


Proficient in standard workstation tools:


- Microsoft Office (Excel, Word, PowerPoint)


- Microsoft Outlook


- Microsoft Project


Candidate Selection Process


Education: B.S. Chemical Engineering preferred, 4-year degree recommended, but degree not required.


Work Experience: Minimum of 5-years experience in the application and programming of process control systems and chemical manufacturing facility design and/or operation.


Experience with ABB 800xA is preferred but not required


Functional Knowledge and/or Experience:


The work is for engineering and implementing software for process control solutions on the process control system installed to operate the process equipment on the plant floor.


The process control system utilized in this job is ABB 800xA.


Candidates with prior process control system application experience are preferred.


Candidates should have experience using (preferred) or knowledge of PC Device Library, PC equipment Library, Object Libraries, and the ability to implement the aforementioned libraries.


Successful candidates should be able to build project libraries, object types, build applications, and complete the functional structure.


The engineering design work will entail the following fundamental steps:


Decompose P&IDs to a functional specification for process automation


Develop and implement a hierarchy for projects and libraries


Compose designed layouts for maximum reuse of complex object type


The ABB 800xA control platform is predominately configured as a state-based process or batch process control system when implemented within the Client. Candidates with state-based control experience or batch experience are preferred.


The ABB 800xA control platform is predominately implemented / installed in chemical manufacturing facilities where chemical engineering wet chemistry processing fundamentals are applied. Candidates with working knowledge of chemical manufacturing facilities are preferred.


Simulation Development experience is preferred
