Product Design Engineer (San Carlos, CA)


Our client, original equipment that produces cutting-edge flex circuits, is currently hiring several Product Engineers. Roles are Direct Hire, hybrid, and candidate should be based out of Novi, MI, Georgetown, Tx or San Carlos, CA.


This role is a hybrid role with 20% travel. Expectation is 1-2 days, or less, onsite, with travel every 4-6 weeks to Customer sites, or other Headquarter sites (Novi, Mi, Georgetown, TX or San Carlos, CA). During first year, if not located in San Carlos, CA, expect frequent travel (San Carlos is the head R&D hub, youll need to be there to learn).


Job Overview:

Engineers are responsible for the design, development, and execution of flex circuit products. This is a multi-faceted role with full product responsibility from conception to production release, that will work directly with OEM and Tier customers to design, build, test and release flex circuit products.


This is a unique opportunity to wear different hats every day as client navigates the automotive electronics space some days meeting with customers to hash out designs and technical specs, some days actually creating designs in the 3D and 2D CAD software environments, some days testing and validating prototype parts, some days working on strategy and partnerships - and some days smiling at the direct impact your efforts have had on creating a brand new automotive supplier.


This will be a multi-faceted role which will 1) directly interface with OEM and Tier customers to design, test, and develop flex circuit products, 2) create 3D CAD models and 2D drawings of flex circuit products, 3) work with process engineering to validate that design intent is maintained within manufacturing/assembly process, and 4) a myriad of other hands-on tasks.


Duties For This Position Include:

Define requirements of flex circuit product based on internal, customer, and regulatory system-level requirements.

Definition and documentation of required flex circuit product features based on customer and system-level requirements.

Design/ Direct creation of 3D models and 2D drawings of wire harnesses, high speed data circuits, and battery pack interconnects using CAD best practices and process.

Build technical requirements and specifications with OEM and Tier customers.

Coordinate technical reviews and submission of deliverables such as 3D data, customer approval drawings and component drawings in line with key program dates.

Support our team by applying knowledge of product development cycle and APQP disciplines to meet all product deadlines.

Proactively seeking out new customer opportunities with existing products or new products for continued business growth.

Coordinate technical reviews and submission of customer deliverables in line with key program dates.

Lead design reviews and DFM analysis.

DVP&R creation and execution to validate products along with DFMEAs and other pertinent APQP documentation.

Develop processes, designs, and material combinations to enhance performance of flexible circuits under various usage cases and applications.

Package components and wire harnesses into vehicles in the 3D environment.

Support CAD best practices and processes to ensure design quality meets performance specifications.

Support Design reviews and DFM analysis.

Support analysis of circuitry and sub-systems.

Ensure design meets customer and internal requirements.

DVP&R (Design Verification Process & Report) creation to validate customer requirements along with DFMEAs (Design Failure Mode and Effects Analysis) and other testing/reporting to achieve PPAP (Production Part Approval Process).


A qualified candidate will have a large subset of these skills:

Proficient In CAD/CAM, Product Design, ISO 9001; CAD Software (AutoCAD, Solidworks, etc.).

Bachelor's Degree in materials science, EE, ME, physics or equivalent. Masters Degree in Mechanical Engineering desired.

Background in wire harness, terminals, connectors and electrical systems.

Wire harness design experience.

Understanding requirements of wire harness and battery performance & test specifications.

Minimum of 3 years of experience in SolidWorks, CATIA V5, or AutoCAD tool sets (as you will be responsible for developing and releasing 3D and 2D drawings for flex circuits for wire harness, battery interconnects, power electronics, etc.

3-5 years of experience in product engineering, applications engineering, Automotive, batteries, or similar field with customer interaction component desired.

5+ years of automotive design experience in either connectors, terminals, wire harness, high voltage components, ECUs/control modules, or battery packs a strong plus. .).

Self-starter Ability to thrive in a fast-paced and dynamic startup atmosphere- not afraid to get your hands dirty, take the lead, wear different role hats depending on the day in a fast-paced startup atmosphere.

Experience in simulation (FEA and CFD) analysis and interpretation.

Experience of product design or application engineering with a customer interaction component.

Basic knowledge of Quality Management Systems (ISO 9001:2015) and Environmental Management Systems (ISO 14001:2015), as applicable.

Working experience with Quality & Reliability disciplines (FMEA, 8D, APQP) and development process (PLM or PDM).

Adept and passion for learning, designing and performing design/validation tests.

Self-motivated drive for results, enthusiasm, and eagerness to learn.

Experience in simulation (FEA and CFD) analysis and interpretation.

Strong understanding of requirements and performance of wire harnesses, high speed data circuits, and batteries.

Experience with design of injection molded parts.

Experience with laser-welding and design for laser-welded components.

Working experience with Quality & Reliability disciplines (FMEA, 8D, APQP) and development process (PLM or PDM).

GD&T knowledge, understanding of CC/SC drawing callouts and effects on manufacturing process.

Adept in data processing and statistical analysis.

Working experience with automotive OEM mechanical/electrical/environmental performance specifications (i.e. USCAR-2, 12, 17, 21, 37, 38).

Working experience with automotive OEM mechanical/electrical/environmental performance specifications (i.e., USCAR-2, USCAR-12, USCAR-17, USCAR-21, USCAR-37, USCAR-38, etc.) a plus.

Design of distances in electrical products, understanding of creepage and clearance ( experience navigating through corrosion scenarios for electrical systemscrevasse corrosion, galvanic, etc.).

Familiar with wire harnessing drawings, schematics, architecture (Connectors, coverings, terminals, retention points/features, routing best practices in automotive environment, Crimping standards, etc.)

Familiar with Electromagnetic interference (EMI) and Electromagnetic compatibility (EMC).

Working experience with automotive and other EMC performance specifications (SAEJ1113, MIL STD 461F, IEC610000) .
