A Regional Vivarium Manager position is available at our clients San Francisco Bay Area site. Our client is a California-based biotech services company founded in 2004 that operates Vivarium-as-a-Service research facilities and conducts pre-clinical research services and studies. This position requires the candidate to be highly motivated and work independently in a fast-paced work environment, comfortable interacting daily with external and internal customers, and adjusting to his/her evolving responsibilities. To perform this job successfully, an individual must be able to perform each essential duty listed below satisfactorily. The requirements listed below are representative of the education, experience, knowledge, skill, and/or ability required.

Job Duties and Responsibilities

Vivarium Operations at Multiple Locations:

+ Manage (and hire) 10-15 animal technicians:

+ Develop and optimize workflow for each animal technician at multiple locations.

+ Follow up on day-to-day execution job duties at all respective vivaria.

+ Host weekly vivarium staff meetings and lead group discussions.

+ Plan overtime and sign time sheets biweekly.

+ Evaluate employee work efficiency and arranges personnel resources.

+ Oversee the animal orders for all clients.

+ Oversee the ordering of facilities materials (caging, bedding, diets for all SF sites).

+ Collaborate with the companys Safety Officer and IACUC Chair, host inspections.

+ Responsible for facility records (per diem forms, RCL forms, cage cards, sentinel records, facility walk-through record, inspection records, etc)

+ Collaborate with companys Safety Officers and IACUC Chair to implement the safety and IACUC policies in vivaria.

+ Oversee reserve, select, and accurately pack animals for customer orders following established shipping procedures.

+ Oversee the DEA program.

Quality Control of Vivarium Services

+ Develop and optimize animal husbandry procedures (SOPs for vivarium operations).

+ Train animal technicians to follow procedures.

+ Set up weekly checklist, conduct weekly walk-through at each vivarium and keep records.

+ Meet with clients and collect feedback comments from clients every month and keep records.

+ Monitor and ensure that safety and IACUC policies are followed in respective vivarium.

Customer Service and Client Communication

+ Coordinate the vivarium services and the on-boarding/off-boarding of clients.

+ Implement room usage protocols.

+ Address clients questions and requests regarding vivarium and technical services.

+ Inform clients the animal health conditions, facility operations, companys operation changes, etc. when needed.

+ Work with Exploras Research team and coordinate vivarium resource usage for the CRO research.

+ Host clients facility visits.

+ Provide access of vivaria to each client and keep the records of facility keys/access cards.

+ Maintain and coordinate instruments on loan.

+ Oversee the supply orders for clients.

+ Interface between IACUC and clients to ensure IACUC policies are followed.

+ Facilitate communication between clients and the IACUC:

+ Communicate and explain IACUC rules and policies to clients.

+ Communicate clients needs and timeline to IACUC.

Facility and Equipment Maintenance

+ Establish equipment inventory for each vivarium.

+ Interface with landlord and outside contractors for facility repairing and maintenance, and keep maintenance logbooks.

Storage Room Maintenance

+ Responsible for setting up and maintaining supply inventory at each vivarium.

+ Responsible for maintaining storage room efficiency.

+ Set up and maintain shelf labeling.

+ Keep proper inventory level and stock rotation.

+ Check expiration dates on all supplies.

+ Ensure sufficient supplies for the vivarium daily operation

+ Proper waste program management

Personnel Management

+ Set up job description for each animal technician.

+ Hire animal technicians when needed.

+ Set up the yearly goals for each animal technician.

+ Evaluate employees performances quarterly.

+ As a direct supervisor, perform coach and counsel and troubleshoot personnel issues.

+ Performance yearly performance review.

Oversee In-house Communication:

+ Keep Supervisor and Upper Management abreast of vivarium operations.

+ Interface and enhance communication between Upper Management and the vivarium staff.

+ Support Upper Management on policy making on vivarium operations.

Physical Demands

+ Dexterity of physical condition to operate all job duties; lift and move objects regularly throughout the shift. Work in a standing position requiring bending and stretching of arms and legs throughout regular work shift.

Special Considerations:

+ Must avoid contact with rodent species outside of work. Must shower in between vivarium visits.

Job Requirements:

+ A BS or BA degree is required and a MS or an AALAS certification is a plus.

+ 5-10 years experience managing pre-clinical or vivarium operations; significant animal care exposure is preferred.

+ Must have a fundamental understanding of animal welfare and the importance of ethical use of animals in research.

+ Familiar with research animal species (mice, rats, guinea pigs, hamsters and rabbits) and their appropriate use.

+ Familiar with laboratory and/or animal research facilities, equipment and supplies.

+ Ability to apply fundamental principles of sanitation and disinfection.

+ Able to operate and maintain scientific equipment related with animal care.

+ Flexible to adjust work schedule to accommodate varying workloads, including weekends, holiday, and evenings to accommodate business needs.

+ Strong writing skills and ability to keep well-documented, accurate work records.

+ Excellent communication skills.

+ Able to work in a high-paced, quality and customer service environment.

+ Able to perform assigned tasks independently.

+ Must be detail-oriented and able to multi-task.

+ Excellent work ethic and must be a team player.

+ Demonstrate proficiency and accuracy in basic mathematical computation.

+ Demonstrate proficiency in business software, email, etc.

+ Understand basic animal techniques, including dosing, blood/tissue collections and etc.

+ Proficient in regulatory compliance (e.g. IACUC, NIH, USDA, AAALAC, OLAW, DEA, FDA)

+ Understand Management principles.

+ Understand Human Resources basics (CA labor law basics).
