We are seeking an individual to work as a Researcher at the National Institutes of Health in Bethesda, MD

This is a long-term contract position which offers:

TASKS/SERVICES. The contractor shall:

+ Coordinate with PI, primary providers, and nursing staff on a regular basis for specimen handling, processing, storage and send out for the following two protocols:

+ 02-HG-0107 - Nervous System Degeneration in Glycosphingolipid Storage Disorders

+ 19-HG-0101 - A Phase 1/2 Study of Intravenous Gene Transfer with an AAV9 Vector Expressing Human Galactosidase in Type I and Type II GM1 Gangliosidosis

Laboratory Support Services

+ Process specimens by centrifuging, separating, measuring volume, and aliquoting according to test requirements and individual service requirements including Pharmacokinetic Studies (PK) which require timed blood draws outside of standard work hours including nights and weekends.

+ Uses biohazard guidelines for the disposal of needles.

+ Compares specimen received to a variety of conditions that must be met such as, correct labeling, amount of specimen received for number and type of tests ordered.

+ Performs complex routines to match samples requested, to number and type of specimen tubes received, to properly account for all research blood orders on the patient.

+ Identifies problems regarding specimens or orders to patient care team e.g. specimens that arrive unlabeled, mislabeled, insufficient quantity for tests requested, or collected in wrong tube; and contacts the care team directly for specimens that are rejected in order to direct the patient care physician to recollect the specimen as needed.

+ Contacts the requesting care team when insufficient sample is drawn to determine preferences for certain tests and ensures that preferred tests are given priority for processing.

+ Receives urine specimens and determines whether it will provide valid test results by computing specimen received to a variety of conditions that must be met such as correct labeling, amount of specimen received, verses tests ordered, use of appropriate tube type, and proper transport ton ice, etc.

+ Package and send patient samples to outside clinical laboratory vendors with completed requisitions for clinical testing.

+ Prepare, send, and receive Remote Kits for local blood draws on patients and their families.

+ Maintain database entries for status of outside patient testing and tracking of specimens and overnight shipping requests.

+ Coordinate with nurse practitioners, ATV staff and Research Nurses to prioritize workload during admissions.

+ Organize and deliver supplies needed during sedated procedures including dry and wet ice, liquid nitrogen, MNG CSF collection tubes in coordination with the clinical teams.

+ Perform daily collection, labeling and transportation of research samples (skin biopsies, research blood, cerebral spinal fluid, and urine) to GGDU laboratory.

+ Package and send all GGDU research samples to outside clinical laboratories.

+ Provide necessary supplies and blood tubes for GGDU patients and family members to clinical teams during the admission visit or for Outpatient Phlebotomy draws.

+ Participate in GGDU-related meetings, including planning meetings for patient admissions.

+ General procurement support provided for the Laboratory Chief and Staff.

+ Place orders in an accurate and prompt fashion.

+ Follow-up with he requestor and vendor in a timely manner if order is delayed.

+ Ensure adherence to the Federal Acquisition Regulation (FAR) and the NIH Purchase Card Program Policies to include: legible signature and date; clear justification, maintenance of complete and accurate records of purchases.

+ Interfaces with AO and purchasing agent to make sure orders are placed and paid in a timely manner.

+ Procurement requests are processed within 3 days or less.

Laboratory Quality Assurance

+ Provides continuing education and in-service training to trainees for safety issues such as discard of sharps and restrictions for collection due to patient needs.

+ Participates in improvement projects for quality assurance.

+ Participates in the development of laboratory standard operating procedures for sample handling and shipping.

+ Regularly attends periodical team and one-on-one meetings with lab director.

+ Complete assignments and meet deadlines requiring minimal revisions.

+ Continuously explores opportunities for quality and process improvement, including making necessary recommendations to staff.

+ Awareness of regulatory environment; compliance with organizational policies and procedures.

+ Participates in activities such as research unit seminars and other lectures to broaden knowledge.

REQUIREMENTS. The contractor must have:

+ Bachelors degree in a related discipline. Four (4) years of specialized experience plus a high school diploma is equivalent to a Bachelors degree.

+ Minimum of four (4) years of experience in a related field.

+ May require night and weekend hours based on the needs of the lab.

+ Experience with Microsoft Office Suite (MS Word, Excel, Outlook).

+ Strong communication skills, both oral and written.

+ Excellent organizational and time management skills.

+ Ability to handle multiple priorities, multi-task and pay close attention to detail.

+ Understanding of safety principles and universal precautions as they apply to medical support operations, and especially as they relate to blood borne pathogen policies.
