We are currently seeking a Science News Writer/Editor to work on-site with the National Heart, Lung, and Blood Institute at the NIH in Bethesda, MD.

This is a long-term contract position which offers:

**TASKS/SERVICES:** The contractor shall:

(1) Write and edit news items (e.g., press releases, stories on scientific advances, articles), highlighting National Heart, Lung, and Blood Institute (NHLBI) research and initiatives.

(2) Research feature stories for posting and promotion on the NHLBI website or features for the NIH Record and/or NIH Catalyst.

(3) Evaluate scientific manuscripts for news value and recommend best course of action for promotion and dissemination of the scientific news.

(4) Translate complex scientific information into plain language, and tailor this information for a variety of audiences and channels.

(5) Work with colleagues across the office to appropriately disseminate information and promote NHLBI-produced products through a variety of communication channels.

(6) Research and compile background information and/or talking points for presentations, media interviews, blogs, etc.

(7) Advise NHLBI staff members on communication opportunities, issues and strategies; work with staff to meet their communication needs.

**REQUIREMENTS:** The contractor must have:

(1) Ph. D. in scientific field or a Masters degree in a scientific field with three (3) to five (5) years of specialized experience is equivalent to a Ph.D.

(2) Minimum of three (3) years of experience in science writing and editing about science and/or research.

(3) Excellent writing and editing skills, especially demonstrated experience in writing news items and other material about advances in science accurately and in a way that non-scientists would find interesting, understandable and engaging.

(4) Experience assessing the significance of and writing about scientific advances and topics for varied national audiences with a broad range of scientific expertise, from scientists to clinicians, to the general public.

(5) Experience validating, editing and translating for the scientific accuracy content written by others, including those with scientific backgrounds and those with nonscientific backgrounds.

(6) Knowledge of Associated Press style and plain language guidelines.

(7) Experience using multiple software programs, platforms and tools, including Microsoft Office Suite (MS Word, Excel, Outlook, PowerPoint) and SharePoint.

(8) Excellent analytical, organizational, and time management skills
