We are seeking an experienced individual to work as a **Scientific Digital Communications Specialist** at the National Institutes of Health in Bethesda, MD.


This is a long-term contract position which offers:

TASKS/SERVICES. The contractor shall:


+ Manage and track diversity products, as well as report to leadership on the status of the source data being used to develop articles, news releases and video content


+ Mentor and develop writing skills of new writers


+ Spearhead and lead the institutes flagship newsletter, The Forefront of Genomics, and work with social, graphics and history team to develop material for each issue


+ Assist with the creation of the editorial statement of purpose and editorial guidelines


+ Produce, edit and host institutes podcast, ensuring that each episode is rigorously fact-checked and effectively communicates about the institutes research portfolio and larger genomics efforts


+ Be an NHGRI representative in professional conferences and meetings to give presentations and build collaborations and partnerships with relevant organizations and personnel


+ Research and write content for digital and print materials, including news articles, press releases, websites, social media, newsletters, presentations, fact sheets, infographics, video scripts, and other products to communicate about the institutes activities and topics in genomics.


+ Help with writing, editing and clearance processes to meet stringent deadlines and to ensure the highest quality materials


+ Provide information to other staff and program experts on NIH editorial and publishing policies and practices


**Develops communication strategies and plans that align with overall program objectives and goals.**


+ Research and write communication strategies and plans that identify goals to be achieved, measurable objectives, audiences, messaging, creative concepts, communication channels, and government clearance requirements.


+ Research and write innovative strategic communication plans to communicate information about scientific research initiatives to ensure that new discoveries are disseminated to key audiences.


+ Research and write plans to monitor the impact and effectiveness of communication strategies and plans.


+ Research and write plans for sharing information with the scientific community and the general public.


+ Attend routine staff meetings to gather information necessary to develop effective communication projects, plans and strategies.


**Prepares written and electronic information documents for various audiences.**


+ Research and write in appropriate scientific or technical style various communication products, to include press releases, newsletter articles, media releases, fliers, web content and video and podcast scripts.


+ Research and design various visual media to include graphics, artwork, and photographs.


+ Research and write scientific and technical messages, talking points, frequently asked questions and presentations.


+ Research and write scientific and technical educational materials for a variety of print and electronic media platforms.


+ Research and write public health information and education materials for a variety of print and electronic platforms.


**Conducts media and content analysis.**


+ Monitor variety of social media and Internet sites, blogs, discussion boards, and news sites, conduct content analysis and report findings.


+ Monitor scientific and technical literature, conduct content analysis and report findings.


+ Monitor the effectiveness of media campaigns through traditional and social media channels, assess results and report findings.


+ Research a variety of survey data using publicly available databases, perform statistical analysis and report findings.


+ Identify key articles, reviews, Internet and social media content and assess relevance and impact to the program.


**Maintains social media and Internet sites, and updates content and materials.**


+ Perform site administration functions related to updating content and design and managing site settings and security protocols.


+ Monitor digital media platform analytics and prepare performance reports.


+ Review visitor feedback and queries submitted through social media and Internet sites and coordinate timely and accurate response.


+ Monitor complimentary, associated and relevant social media and Internet sites and accounts, linking to relevant content and preparing responses as necessary.


+ Coordinate photographic and videographic resources to capture quality imagining and footage for posting to social media and Internet sites with appropriate captions.


**Monitors press coverage through press calls, news alerts, and other sources.**


+ Determine ways for the organization to work more closely with media and groups to communicate with audiences interested in or affected by programs.


+ Track frequently asked questions at speaking engagements and other events and develop materials to address relevant questions.


+ Respond to media inquiries promptly.


+ Work with the team to issue press releases, and with authors to support their use of press releases.


+ Identify needs and develop content for various communication mediums to increase visibility of the program.


**Builds relationships with the press and maintains specialized contacts.**


+ Establish and develop relationships with key stakeholders and public affairs personnel of specialized advocacy groups.


+ Establish and maintain cooperative relationships with members of the press and external stakeholders.


+ Meet with internal and external stakeholders to identify communications gaps and collaboration opportunities.


+ Establish and maintain positive relationships and engage in two-way dialogue with key stakeholders.


+ Build strong relationships and collaborate with key partners, news makers and news generators.


**Attends workshops, seminars, and meetings to stay abreast of current scientific and policy trends.**


+ Plan, execute, and attend national professional conferences and events.


+ Represent the program at meetings and conferences with tribal leaders, organizations, and members, as well as the general public.


+ Attend the coordinating committee and working group meetings as well as weekly meetings of the leadership team.


+ Attend meetings and conferences to keep abreast of the extramural activities.


+ Attend workshops, seminars and meetings to stay abreast of current scientific and policy trends.


**Identifies new meetings and conferences to promote initiatives within the Program.**


+ Coordinate program activities at exhibit booths and provide information and services regarding the program to members of the research community at conferences.


+ Coordinate with other program offices to create outreach and engagement plans.


+ Plan for conferences and to continuously seek areas of improvement for the program.


+ Identify opportunities for the program leadership to proactively engage with external organizations, including through high-profile speaking opportunities, workshops, leadership meetings, etc.


+ Serve as an expert resource to staff and consortium members about opportunities and challenges for engagement with the program.


**Provides communication and media subject matter expertise and coordinates media engagements.**


+ Coordinate with other program offices to create outreach and engagement plans.


+ Plan for conferences and to continuously seek areas of improvement for the program.


+ Identify opportunities for the program leadership to proactively engage with external organizations, including through high-profile speaking opportunities, workshops, leadership meetings, etc.


+ Serve as an expert resource to staff and consortium members about opportunities and challenges for engagement with the program.


+ Attend scientific meetings and seminars to identify new research developments and activities, including publication/announcement of research results, launching of clinical trials or initiatives involving new technologies, and others.


REQUIREMENTS. The contractor must have:


+ Ph.D. Degree in in a science related field
