We are currently seeking a Scientific Podcast Producer to work on-site with the NIH in Bethesda, MD.

**TASKS/SERVICES:** The contractor shall:

(1) Oversee and coordinate all creative and technical aspects related to the NIH Intramural Research Program (IRP) podcast series Speaking of Science, which features the research being conducted by IRP investigators.

(2) Identify IRP investigators whose research would be of interest to a diverse audience by monitoring press releases, biomedical news, online scientific discussions and social media channels across the NIH IRP.

(3) Conduct literature searches and perform additional background research to determine the key messages that should be covered in the course of an interview; spend significant time on background to have sufficient familiarity with the subject matter to be covered during the interview.

(4) Develop appropriate questions and talking points to allow for the investigators work to be discussed in a conversational manner, as well as other topics that might make the investigator more relatable to the public, such as the investigators motivations for working in his or her subject domain and interesting aspects of his or her life outside of work.

(5) Develop potential dialogue sketches and storyboards for each podcast that will enable a natural back-and-forth with the subject; avoid heavily scripted approaches to the interview; minimize post-interview editing and re-recording.

(6) Supply pre-interview questions to podcast subjects, as needed, and solicit any interesting storylines that the subject feels would be of interest to a general audience.

(7) Handle all aspects of podcast scheduling and recording equipment set-up.

(8) Prepare engaging introductions for each podcast to entice the audience to listen to the entire interview (and become regular listeners as new subscribers.

(9) Perform post-interview sound editing of audio recordings to ensure that the final product is of high-quality and glitch free.

(10) Work with podcast subjects and any other relevant NIH parties to review and obtain approval for all recordings prior to posting.

(11) Disseminate podcasts through all IRP podcast channels and write social media posts to inform followers of the availability of new podcast content.

(12) Perform additional activities aimed at building audience share, connecting the podcast to new and diverse audiences, including distributing IRP-generated content to individual IC IRPs for their own use, as appropriate.

(13) Plan, develop, implement and provide support for all NIH IRP social media channels and activities

(14) Employ communications best practices and maintain a conversation calendar for continual review of content themes and planning purposes.

(15) Monitor biomedical news and social media channels across the IRP and NIH.

(16) Contribute material for posting to existing IRP social medial channels as well as for emerging social media platforms.

(17) Organize and direct photo sessions, as needed.

(18) Plan, record and edit video stories using professional high-definition video, audio, and lighting equipment; perform post-processing tasks using Final Cut Pro, Apple Logic, and/or Adobe Premiere software.

(19) Use Drupal content management system (CMS) to continually upload and edit web site content.

(20) Participate in graphic design meetings aimed at continual refinement of all IRP-based web sites and allied properties; maintain consistent branding across all digital and print media.

(21) Contribute to target audience research and content performance analyses.

(22) Collaborate with IRP and NIH staff on buzz events to distribute information and guild awareness of the IRP to multiple audiences both on- and off-campus.

(23) Participate in weekly status meetings with IRP project leadership, as well as in any additional in-person meetings involving strategic planning and development with respect to the Promoting the IRP Campaign.

(24) Represent IRP team leadership at various meetings involving IRP staff throughout the NIH, on an as-needed basis.

(25) Work with staff on the preparation of materials for IRP team leadership for periodic progress reports to the Scientific Directors and other senior NIH leadership.



**REQUIREMENTS:** The contractor ideally would have:

(1) Masters degree in Biology, Chemistry, Journalism, Communications or a related discipline; three (3) years of specialized experience plus a Bachelors degree is equivalent to a Masters degree.

(2) Minimum of two (2) years of communications experience in a science or health communications role.

(3) A minimum of two (2) years of experience in all aspects of podcast production, from conceptualization through production and post-production.

(4) Excellent technical skills to support production of monthly podcasts and a proven ability to identify and correct audio impairments.

(5) Expertise in researching online information, asking insightful questions, and translating complex scientific information into plain language.

(6) A thorough understanding of best practices in applying widely used social media channel tools to manage content and dissemination.

(7) Ability to manage multiple concurrent projects, priorities and deadlines.

(8) Outstanding communication skills, both oral and written.

(9) Excellent interpersonal, analytical, organizational and time management skills.
