Description and Requirements

SUMMARY OF POSITION: The Senior Data Scientist is responsible for supporting the build out and growth of the Data Science business unit at WCG. The role requires the performance of advanced analytics on the clinical data asset, and extensive interaction with the business to provide domain expertise to create insights. The ability to serve up complex findings in an understandable way is critical to this role. This individual is considered subject-matter expert in the data associated with operational clinical trial management as well as available data sources contained within the WCG including the Knowledge Base.

EDUCATION REQUIREMENTS:

        Bachelors degree required, preferably in Life Sciences or Mathematics, Statistics, Engineering, Computer Science, or a quantitative discipline from a recognized University or College. Advanced degree preferred.

QUALIFICATIONS/EXPERIENCE:

  • 5+ years of progressive relevant work experience in development with progressing experience with data analytics, market research, and/or data mining in developing feasibility and clinical trial development strategies are required.
  • 1+ years of experience analyzing large data sets, applying a variety of statistical techniques such as regression, discriminant analysis, cluster analysis, and Bayesian Theory are desired.
  • Practical experience, understanding, and demonstrated experience mining, manipulating and presenting of complex scientific data as it relates to clinical research and market analyses.
  • Experience with data visualization tools, such as Power BI, D3.js, GGplot, etc.; machine learning techniques and algorithms, such as k-NN, Naive Bayes, SVM, Decision Forests, etc.; and common data science toolkits, such as Python, R, Weka, NumPy, or MatLab. Excellence in at least one of these is highly desirable.
  • Prior utilization of query languages such as SQL, Hive, Pig.
  • Experience with NoSQL databases, such as MongoDB, Cassandra, HBase.
  • Applied statistics skills, such as distributions, statistical testing, regression, etc.
  • Scripting and programming skills.

ESSENTIAL DUTIES/RESPONSIBILITIES: To perform this job successfully, an individual must be able to perform each essential duty and responsibility satisfactorily. The requirements listed below are representative of the knowledge, skills, and/or ability required.

  • Assist the organization discover the information hidden in vast amounts of data (open source, licensed and proprietary) and make smarter decisions to deliver excellent services and products
  • Apply data mining techniques, doing statistical analysis, and building high quality prediction systems integrated with existing and future services/products
  • Select features, building and optimizing classifiers using machine learning techniques
  • Enhance data collection procedures to include information that is relevant for building analytic systems
  • Process, cleanse, and verify the integrity of data used for analysis
  • Conduct ad-hoc analysis and presenting results in a clear manner
  • Support team members developing, analyzing, interpreting and presenting of operational data in support of strategy and planning
  • Conduct data mining of open sourced, licensed and proprietary data sources and initiates/oversees collection of data for use in development of robust strategies for clinical trials
  • Provide day to day support of the business as required in order to efficiently and effectively model and forecast from feasibility data and other relevant information to allow for the development of evidence-based strategies for inclusion into client deliverables
  • Prepare clinical trial operational predictions/forecasts with appropriate guidance from internal clinical operational experts
  • Other duties as assigned by supervisor. These may, on occasion, be unrelated to the position described here.
