**SUMMARY**




+ IT Unified Communications Network Services provides planning and implementation activities to deliver Wide Area Network (WAN), Local Area Network (LAN), Wireless (LAN) for the entire UC Davis Health enterprise. In response to institutional requirements, the department provides technological leadership and support for the cost-effective use of computers, software and networking to include installation, training and problem resolution.

+ The Network Operations Engineer is technical leader with a high degree of knowledge in the overall field and recognized expertise in specific areas; problem-solving frequently requires analysis of unique issues/problems without precedent and/or structure; manages programs that include formulating strategies and administering policies, processes, and resources; functions with a high degree of autonomy.

+ Under general direction, the Network Operations Engineer applies advanced professional communications concepts, industry practices and relevant policies, procedures and objectives to resolve highly complex issues where analysis of situations or data requires an in-depth evaluation of variable factors. The Network Operations Engineer determines methods, techniques and evaluation criteria to obtain results.

+ The Network Operations Engineer is an experienced and qualified technical professional in the area of configuring, installation, maintenance, and troubleshooting of local and wide area network, including but not limited to routers, switches, VPN, WLAN, VoIP, authentication servers, load balancers, security technologies and network monitoring tools. The Network Operations Engineer will provide experienced technical support for installation, maintenance and troubleshooting of all network equipment, including software applications applicable to networking. Responsibilities include knowledge of routing protocols, switching technologies, wireless, VPN, authentication servers, and security technologies





**RESPONSIBILITIES**




+ Monitors LAN/WAN/WLAN using network monitoring tools, performing traffic study analysis to determine best configuration of network components.

+ Participates in the development and directs configuration of network diagnostic tools and software.

+ Develops specifications for and takes lead role in testing and evaluation of new or enhanced network services.

+ Initiates or recommends complex and highly complex communications and network system changes.

+ Develops and maintains documentation pertaining to installation and troubleshooting network components, applications or appliances including Visio drawings

+ Provides tier 2/3 escalation support in resolving any network problems that may be seen on network monitoring software, partnering with Network Engineering

+ Pro-active in support, maintenance and implementation of equipment or software

+ Evaluates broad and complex user and network requirements and design, specifies and installs core distribution and access electronics.

+ Provides expert advice to other units on new or retrofit building projects and communications infrastructure.




+ Directs staff in configuration and/or directly configures network switches, routers, firewalls, VPN, authentication servers, load balancers, wireless controllers, access points, and other network components for new installation, routing maintenance, and/or problem resolution

+ Update all documentation with new installs and changes including spreadsheets, Visio diagram, Word documents, etc

+ Troubleshoots highly complex issues in network systems software and distribution and access electronics.

+ Works directly with vendor/manufacturer technical support to isolate and resolve highly complex hardware and software issues.

+ Provides packet capture and advanced analysis of packet traces for troubleshooting and isolating application or network faults

+ Represent network operations in advanced or high-profile voice and data network outages, issues, performance problems or special requests for assistance





**SKILLS REQUIRED**




+ Advanced knowledge of professional communications and network systems in the completion of diverse assignments.

+ Advanced knowledge of the practices and techniques of the voice and data field and the ability to determine a course of action based on guidelines.

+ Understands implications of work on other areas.

+ Has highly developed problem-solving skills to independently resolve issues using defined parameters and technical expertise.

+ In-depth, advanced understanding of various network hardware platforms, network related protocols and software including understanding of OSI layer 2 and 3 protocols at a complex level and related technical standards critical to the operation of interconnected networks.

+ Demonstrated ability to analyze highly complex communication hardware and software systems for maintaining a real-time resource that impacts our network users.

+ Advanced knowledge and experience working with network management systems.

+ Demonstrated ability to gather, organize and analyze data in the completion of a variety of functional assignments.
