Description **SysAdmin / Middleware Administrator**

**Location:** Sacramento, CA
**Duration:** Contract to Hire

**Duties:**


+ Overall responsibility for the effectiveness, quality, and uptime of the middleware environment, sites, and tools.
+ Responsible for installation, configuration, operation and maintenance of servers (physical and VM), primarily running Linux; configured with Puppet.
+ Responsible for maintaining a secure computing environment, recommending secure computing policies, and to keep up with security trends and best practices.
+ Manage routine OS patching and application software updates.
+ Responsible for monitoring and notification for web and middleware infrastructure components using ELK or Sitescop, develop guidelines and metrics, and make recommendations for performance tuning and optimization.
+ Responsible for maintaining backups and understanding restore and DR procedures.
+ Work with business process staff to maintain asset management inventory, with change management and operations center staff to assure integration of application deployments with operational standards, and with the storage team to support our data protection systems.
+ Assist teams as needed to provide application server expertise.
+ Work with existing Backup administrators to provide support for TSM and BackupPC data protection systems.
+ Perform in a project leadership role, when necessary, for application integration efforts and systems work.

+ Provide support, as needed, for Basic Science Departments and their research computational need.
+ Work closely with the web application development staff to provide a stable computing environment and to help with application rollout, testing & debugging.
+ Provide point of contact for developers and content providers for dealing with system/environmental problems.
+ Administer java web application environment, web app software, tools & infrastructure.
+ Contribute to design and architecture reviews of the hosting infrastructure for web based applications, and to ensure we keep up to date with industry standards.
**Required:**


+ 5+ years’ experience with the operational aspects of large scale systems, demonstrated experience with Unix/Linux systems, tools, backups, security and related IT infrastructure with experience in virtual server technologies, backup and restore processes, and security best practices.
+ Experience with Puppet configuration management software, or strong with tools such as Chef, Salt, Ansible, or SCCM.
+ Experience with the ELK monitoring suite, or other monitoring and analysis tools such as Splunk, Sitescope, Nagios.
+ Strong experience with development support, application delivery, and administration of web application containers such as Glassfish, OAS, JBoss, or Tomcat, & web frontends such as Apache or Nginx.
+ Understand the value of automation and have written solutions in a variety of programming languages such as sh, python, perl, php, ruby.
+ Experience with managing databases platforms ( MySQL, MSSQL, or Oracle)
+ Excellent written and oral communication skills.
+ Excellent organizational skills to coordinate several simultaneous activities in a dynamic work environment, with frequent changes in work priority, scope and schedules.
**Preferred:**


+ Demonstrated experience with Hiera
+ Experience with continuous integration tools
+ Experience in infrastructure architecture for highly available, scalable, fault-tolerant, and load balanced server clusters
+ Good knowledge of application security, platform hardening against intrusions, vulnerability assessment, and source code analysis techniques
+ Ability to perform basic administration of Windows Server technologies and environments
+ Demonstrable experience in the preparation of project plans and estimates.
+ Bachelor’s Degree in Computer-Science/Engineering
