**Product / Tooling Designer**

The Materials Science & Engineering department supports many different businesses through product design and development, both at the conceptual stage as well as final detail design during the execution phase.

Specifically, the job consists of three areas (It is expected that while most candidates are not "expert" in all of these competencies, a high skill in concept development and real life expertise in computer aided design is important along with interest and willingness to learn the remainder are essential.):

1. Develop part and tooling designs, primarily using CAD type resources working in conjunction with engineers.

2. Working knowledge of CNC and machining practices with a knowledge of tooling fabrication.

3. Work with rapid prototyping resources to create samples of new designs.

Minimum Requirements:

Special Skills/Qualifications:

+ Applied knowledge of engineering processes for the development of prototypes or other original concepts.
+ Must work safely and adhere to personal protective equipment (PPE) requirements.

+ 3-5 years minimum mechanical design experience
+ Formal training in design or engineering related field
+ CAD experience required; Solidworks or NX, although Solidworks is prefered.
Skill Requirements:

This role involves meeting with internal clients/customers to determine project objectives. Communication of deliverables and project timing with stakeholders is expected. Communication both verbally and in writing is expected. Must be able to use PowerPoint.

Will need to be involved with developing the project scope. This includes writing and submitting project initiation requests, preparing a drawing packaging, and leading a design review. Specifying and ordering components for the design work is also expected.


+ Keeps project stakeholders informed regarding project status and changes
+ Communicate to engineer(s) the status/progress of projects/assignments.
+ Expected to interface with other engineering disciplines on multidiscipline project teams.
+ Occasional interaction with consultants and external vendors/suppliers
+ Schedules and leads design and progress reviews
+ Participates in design reviews, team checks, site inspections, and progress meetings to obtain feedback and learning.
+ Frequent communication with the tool/mold shop on active projects.
+ Technical Skills
+ Collect field data and take field measurements
+ Generates rough sketches, or schematics to develop engineering concepts into visual designs.
+ Proficient at taking concepts and transferring to mechanical design.
+ Specifies dimensions and other data for layout and/or detailing. .
+ Develops and lays out original design concepts.
+ Develops layouts into detailed designs
+ Can determine components that require detailed stress analysis and assemble documents for analysis to be done.
+ Knows where to find information and applies with some direction from senior designers or discipline engineer(s).
+ General awareness of proper fabrication techniques and processes
+ General awareness of plastics processing technologies
+ Able to check function and fit of components and assemblies in detail drawings
+ Able to ensure proper component installation and assembly.
+ Able to appropriately select and specify Materials of Construction
+ Able to appropriately select and specify coatings and surface treatments
+ Able to appropriately select and size fasteners
+ Ability to apply Strength of Materials knowledge
+ Understands and applies Fits and Limits
+ Effectively uses alignment features and components
+ Understands and effectively uses standard machine components such as gears, slides, bearings, couplings
The job is a combination of "hands-on" activities coupled with medium amount of engineering Design and other "desk type" efforts. People with prior experience in Design and Tool & Die type shop operations tend to be more successful in this position. The ideal candidate would have a broad design and engineering perspective while at the same time are able to execute the specific design project duties required to make the projects successful.
